Spirit Mountain is the 2nd best ski area in Minnesota, in my mind. Its signature run, Four Pipe, is usually very well groomed and offers a nice view of Duluth and Lake Superior. Its 5400' long and despite the fact it's a green circle it actually is a lot of fun. Some decent mogul runs and expert runs here.

Season passes are cheap - only $130 (first-time season pass holders) or $170 (regular) if you order before November. Also, you can find hotels/motels in Duluth for $50/night or less (Willard Munger Inn is a cheap option for $20 per person per night.)

If you want significantly better skiing, head up Hwy 61 for 2 hours to Lutsen. The lift tickets are much more expensive and the lodging is a lot more money, but it's at least three times the size of Spirit Mountain.

However, Spirit has good lifts and nice people. The terrain park is more varied than any I have seen and it has some really big stuff (even though I don't use it.)
