If your like me and live in the east side of the Twin Cities then Afton is about the best you can do in the metro area. Welch may be better overall (debatable) but it's nearly twice as far to drive each way. Trollhaugen and Wild mountain are an even further drive and much smaller overall. I think most people in this area simply ski the hill that they live clostest to, as they are all pretty small. Afton is almost always a fun time and the staff is great. I'd avoid the place on most Saturdays as they get so busy the hill becomes dangerous. I prefer to night ski here where the crowds are non-existant, you can ski right up to the lifts and you can have entire runs all to yourself. Most of the time night skiers are of much better skill as well and you'll see far less out of control skiing. Friday nights often have huge crowds as well when bus after bus of middle and high schoolers invade the hill and try to not run into each other on the way down. Some Friday's are insanely busy and others are not. It all depends on the number of buses that arrive. Head for the highlands area where lift lines tend to be smaller and the runs are longer. They have an excellent park this year for those that want it... Much better than the last few years.
