I first went to Livigno in December 2008, which was actually my first winter holiday and my first time on a snowboard. I had an amazing time with my best mates family. We were all beginners and it was a great experience. The slopes were perfect to start out snowboarding or skiing and move onto developing your skills into the intermediate bracket. The town itself is really nice with a lot of charm and some great restaurants, lunch time places to eat and shops scattered along the valley. I went back with friends the next year and we just as good a time as the previous year. Livigno is definitely a special resort nestled deep within the alps and borders with Switzerland. The resort is high so snow coverage is excellent even from early on in December so going over xmas isn't a problem. There is also a lot to do, including snowmobiling, dogsledding, bum boarding etc. The resort is also super cheap (probably one of the cheapest in Europe) due to its tax-free status, which makes a holiday in Livigno really good value for money, especially for first-timers. Tuition quality is also top notch as there is a massive ski and board lessons programme, which should definitely suit families and beginners. But inters shouldn't be put off by this as there are a range of varied main areas, some runs of which are really challenging and exciting. Freestylers and park rats should also have fun here. Make sure you go in Feb or March as the excellent snowpark at Mottolino will be open. You can also catch the Burton RiverJump in mid to late season, depending on the year which, I believe, is a TTR five star event. Overall this place is a brilliant Italian resort with great boarding/skiing for beginners and inters, and is a great place to spend a week or two. The nightlife however is a little lacking but if you go with a company like Neilson, their reps are guaranteed to offer you a fun week, picking out the best of their bars and clubs to venture into late at night. However, this is a perfect place for families.
