The Kleinwalsertal is surrounded almost totally by high mountains cutting of the ski region from the rest of the Austrian territory. A traffic connection only exists to Oberstdorf on the German side of the nearby border.

The altitudes of the ski resorts at 1086 – 1250 metres as well as the location of the Kleinwalsertal on the northern edge of the Alps provide a good amount of snowfall. Skiing in Kleinwalsertal is thus typically possible between December and April.

Nestled by the mountains Kanzelwand, Ifen, Walmendingerhorn and Heuberg the ski resorts in Kleinwalsertal spread out over the whole valley. They offer many and about 40 km of cross country ski tracks and 50 km of ploughed hiking trails.
