Recently, I visited Lookout Pass to ski. I live in Los Angeles, and a friend invited me to come and see their new home and ski their local ‘hill.’
I learned to ski at Mammoth and June Mountains. I have visited all of the primary resorts in California, Colorado, Utah and New Mexico in my 35 years of skiing. I have NEVER experienced anything like the warm, relaxed, down-home feeling of Lookout Pass.
• We were greeted with smiles and a ‘hello’ by employees and guests alike;
• We chatted with people in the lodge as if they were OLD friends;
• We marveled at the relaxed, safe environment of the lodges…with toddlers left in the lodge to color in books and daypacks left in corners or under tables;
• We were BLOWN AWAY by the families on the mountain on Saturday for the free lessons—and stories we heard on lifts of 3 generations of skiers introduced to the sport in this fashion. (In addition, we fully RECOGNIZED that many of these families could never afford to ski Sun Valley or Mammoth---in other areas, the sport has left the ‘middle class’ behind);
• AND, we enjoyed a mountain with little/no lift lines, good grooming and full variety of skiing to amuse us for a 3-day vacation.
I hope that your publication recognizes and reviews the gem of Lookout Pass….a taste of olden days and important link IF there is to BE a future to the ski industry.
