My wife and I took our three children, ages 3, 5, and 8, to the Engadin Valley for a spring ski holiday. We stayed in Samedan, taking the bus each day to Celerina for skiing. During the winter, there is skiing in Samedan on a small scale, but our first day there was the last day any lifts in Samedan were running - still that gave us a nice warm-up for the following days in Celerina.
The ski school for the children was excellent, with instructors who spoke just about every language you can imagine. The older kids LOVED ski school. The baby did not like it at all, but that was not the fault of the instructors by any means.
Skiing in the Alps is totally different than in the US. The areas with the majority of the runs are largely tree-less, making for wide-open runs, with lots of room for everyone. The Alps have a reputation for being more icy, which is true, but the runs were groomed fairly often, and it really wasn't a problem. In fact, I enjoyed the skiing very much.
If you ski the Engadin, you have to take the cable car up to Piz Nair. The view is spectacular, and there are loads of off-piste runs. I am past the age of back-country skiing, but there is also a nice, well-maintained run down from Piz Nair.
The Engadin is an excellent ski spot!
