Stratton is an excellent mountain for Southern Vermont. It is a large mountain (over 600 acres) and has a big verticle of over 2,000 feet.
There are no crowds midweek and on the weekends crowds are only on the gondola and Ursa lifts. There are many six-packs and quads. The gondola decent, but the cabins need to be replaced. The capacity is 12 people, but only 6 can sit, making it very uncomfortable on weekends + your skis/boards go in the cabin with you. The seats are plastic benches that are so high up, that you can't get a footing on the floor so you slide off. The paint is chipping and the glass is so scratched you can't see out the window.
Stratton has the best glades in Southern Vermont. There are tight-packed, steep, exhilarating glades like Test Pilot and Shred Wood Forest. Glades like like Emerald Forest are mellow glades with far apart trees. There are plenty of expert and beginner trails, but Stratton lacks long intermediate cruisers. All the intermediate trails are in the lower part of the Sun Bowl and lower part of the American Express area. And there aren't enough mogul trails. I only remember Lower Salmon Glade, World Cup, and the left half of Upper Standard being bumped up.
The terrain parks are great, but even with the low-snow year, The super park on the Sun Bowl and the half pipe weren't complete when I went on Feb. 29 (happy leap year!).
If you are going midweek, or even weekend, and you use the Sun Bowl lodge, the Solstice Quad usually isn't running. This requires you to take an intermediate trail to the rest of the mountain (unless the Shooting Star is running on the weekends only). And the only beginner trail back to the Sun Bowl is a long, flat traverse that can take a beginner twenty minutes to get down in hard pack conditions.
Stratton is a mountain I would definitely recommend.
