Don't know what happened to "Mr. Horrible", but BV is the best deal in the Sierra. On the cheaper side AND two HUGE benefits: (1) no lines, unless you call 5 minutes on a holiday weekend a line. I've waited 30+ minutes at Northstar. (2) No Tahoe traffic. What does this mean to you? It means you will get way more skiing time per dollar than any other place, and you won't waste any time on the road. Good ski instructors family friendly.
Ok, except for Grizzly (advanced only) the runs are not super long, but you won't be waiting long before you are back on them again. The new bowl has some fun terrain, longer runs, but the downfall is the bus ride. I recommend doing it right before lunch, and lunching in the village. If you bring your own lunch, park in the village and ride the bus up so you can ski the Lunch Run or New Vista Bowl twice, once at lunch, once at the end of the day.
Bear Valley folks are friendly and just like to ski and snowboard and telemark. No need for fancy outfits. If you go to the mountains for the "scene" go waste your money somewhere else.
If you are looking for a place to buy a cabin...awesome place for those who love the outdoors and don't care about casinos. BV hosts a unique "snowmobile access" community. WE LOVE IT!
