We spent Christmas 2009 in Kaprun - staying at Hotel Kaprunerhof which was great - particularly the food. Kaprun is a relatively quiet town with a few good bars and restaurants. Plenty to keep you amused for the week. You have to get a ski bus (about 10/15mins) to get the gondola up onto the mountain but it's worth it once you're up there. We experienced pretty crazy weather - as it's so high a couple of days were very cold and visibility not great. On days like that another option is to go back to the town and go on the Maiskogel slopes - bit lower - and really pretty. The lift pass is also linked with Zell am See (regular bus ride to Zell from Kaprun) if you want more options.
We would definitely go back to Kaprun - might just leave it a bit later in the season - speaking to a local he said the glacier is really at it's best in March/April.
