686 and New Balance teamed up to build a completely new boot for 2012/2013. The result: 1971 Speedlace. The boot integrates New Balance’s MINIMUS barefoot running technology into the snowboarding boot. This removes excess materials and weight while maximizing the response of boot-to-binding performance. The boot has good stability and flex with a lower profile. Additional features include New Balance’s proprietary Abzorb technology, Quick-Strike Velcro for the cuff top, injected TPU reinforcement and the patented SCL zonal speedlacing system. The 1971 Speedlace is 686’s lightest model to date.
