New for 2013/2014, Völkl adds an 81 millimeter-waisted ski to the Ride the Mountain family. Testers applauded its carving ability, calling it the “pinnacle of edge hold,” according to Attridge. One of the unique attributes of this Frontside carver is the full rocker profile, which comes in a gradual bend from tip to tail and creates more effective edging the more the ski is put on edge. Construction includes a wood core, a layer of steel and race-oriented reinforcement channels over the sidewalls and edges to prevent chatter and increase stability. “Juice the tails and it will send you,” Witman warned. “Stay forward and the ski stays stable, smooth and holds really well.” Testers agreed that the RTM 81 is a strong ski, but as Gaudet noted, “it’s easy enough for an intermediate and solid enough for an aggressive skier.”
