This is the major resort in Central Switzerland. The journey to near the top of Mt. Titlis, a mountain that is nearly two miles high, is done in three sections and will take about 45 minutes, not much time to invest for what lies ahead.

The first part is a gondola ride from town up to Trubsee, then a transfer to a cable car up to the Stand restaurant, then onto the Rotair, which, by the way, is the world's first revolving cable car.

Skiers and snowboarders can play on top for a while and eventually head downhill via a dramatic vertical – one of the longest in the Alps – for about 13 km.

You'll be able to enjoy 82 km of downhill pistes. Residents of Lucerne, about 31 km away, consider Engelberg their weekend home away from home. Lucerne is a great bet for sightseeing for visiting skiers, too.
