Spent two days at Whitecap. Skiing was good. But overall, the resort is (1) unkempt: there is junk lying around the lodge that I remember seeing 15years ago, (2) unsanitary: to say the lodge is showing its age is a gross understatement...the bedspread in my room had stains on it that genuinely frightened my daughter, and the bathroom had an extensive collection of dead bugs in the light fixture, (3) unsafe: we had a lift operator sitting in his hut, come out just in time to watch a chair with the seat stuck in the "up" position drive us in all directions, and then refuse to stop the lift and help us reload properly! The real kicker was when management acknowledged the hazardous situation and said of the operator's negligence, "Well, everyone has an off day."
I couldn't wait to go back to Whitecap after so many years. But to anyone for whom cleanliness and safety are concerns, I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere!

I agree with the many good comments about this resort and will add the snow is amazing it just feels real. In the midwest we get the syntheic stuff so what a treat to have this. One big compalint, they run the lifs at the slowest speeds. They do not have high speed, which I understand is a big investment. Short of that lets run the traditional lifts at least medium speeds. There are good skiers on this mtn, so they don't have to run them slow like some sort of Bunny hill.
Hope the owner reads this.

My experience was terrible. Terrible lifts, extremely unorganized. Nothing marked correctly: random drop-offs, no boundary markings etc. Nice personable staff though.

As promised I will now give a review of the skiing conditions of Whitecap Mountain. So the it's pretty much awesome. If you've ever been out west, Whitecap will remind you of how it was out there. The mountains have a lot of terrain, you can't possibly do all the runs in one day. Also you do not just ski one side, you can go down the back sides of the mountains, into the woods, everywhere. It is not crowded because of the business powderhorn and black jack steal. Obviously Whitecap has nowhere near the vertical like Colorado does, but the diversity of runs will definitely remind you of good skiing.

Okay so whoever has been talking crap about the lodge. SHUT UP. Okay so it's not a five star hotel, but its a lodge. When you go on a ski trip, this place is exactly what you want. The pool and in wide open spaces. This place has the feel of a resort for a ski trip. I'm hitting the slopes for the first time tomorrow, but just from looking at it, there is more terrain than anywhere else in the midwest (besides maybe Lutsen which is almost in Canada). This is perfect for people in their 20's who want to chill out relax and maybe get their drink on. Families too even.

Whitecap Mountain is the BEST ski resort in the Midwest. I've taken my ski club there three years in a row, and the first year I had a hard time getting people to sign up because no one had heard of it. But when we returned and people heard about the skiing, the next year I had considerably more and the last year I carried a full bus.

Whitecap is a real fooler, and since they don't advertise it's never crowded. Once you take the lift up the front face, ski down the backside and you're in "ski heaven". At first glance you think you're out west and you'll really need your trail map (although most trails are not visibly marked, you just have to guess). Also, take time to visit the "Winehut" for an Apple Pie (Rum and apple juice)and definitely plan ahead when it's time to go back to your lodging because it will take a while to find your way back to the front of the mountain (usually 2-3 extra rides up the lift before finding the right trail back).

The accommodations at the Lodge are a bit rustic, but clean and do-able. For better accommodations try there villas and townhouses, most ski-in/ski-out and have kitchen facilities so you can cook for yourself because the restaurant does leave you wanting. Dollar for dollar, Whitecap is the best value for top flight skiing in the Midwest.

I have skied Indianhead, Powderhorn, and Blackjack and I would agree with other reviewers that Whitecap has the best skiing for intermediate and expert skiers. There are very few runs to interest expert skiers at the other resorts (Blackjack has none and there are only a couple at Indianhead and Powderhorn) but Whitecap has several legitimate black diamond runs and their double black runs will challenge almost anybody.

We stayed at the lodge and enjoyed it very much but it may not be for everybody. The positives are that the rooms, pool, and hot tub are all very large. The negatives are that the lodge is really showing it's age so the rooms are "Rustic" at best. Still, you can't beat the location and you have an incredible variety of rooms to choose from. We really wished we had a larger group so we could try one of the two story rooms with a loft. Our room with microwave an fridge also came with a table for four, dishes, silverware, a toaster and a sink to wash the dishes in. I just hope they don't run out of business, it really is a fun place!

I have been going to the U.P ski slopes for years and have found Whitecap to have the best skiing I think this may even be the best skiing in the midwest. We had been going to Powderhorn every year and would visit other slopes in the area. We had never heard of Whitecap Mountain. We were going thru Hurley and saw a sign on a building advertising Whitecap Mountain resort so we made the trip not expecting much were we wrong. This is by far the best skiing in the U.P. if not the midwest. He leaves alot of slopes to be Powder not the Groomed slopes you usually see but dont get me wrong the slopes he grooms are excellent. The scenery is beautiful and the skiing excellent. Very family friendly you never have to wait for a lift. When you first get to the mountain you will only see two slopes but dont let that fool you once you take the lift to the top there are endless trails and ski till your tired and you will be. If you have not been here make the trip you will not be dissapointed. We were just there the end of December and will be going back again in January and March. We live down in Illinois and this is a 7 hour drive for us so that should tell you something that this is more than worth the trip.

Whitecap Mountain could be a good place to Ski if the Old man would start grooming hills the way places like Powderhorn & Indianhead do. I just returned from four days up here where we spent three of those days skiing at Whitecap & One at Powderhorn. We received 24 inches of snow on Saturday & Sunday and we spent Monday at Powderhorn and the Skiing was top notch with all trails groomed powder. We then spent Christmas day skiing at Whitecap and even with a 24 hour lead time the owner still had no more then 20 % of the runs groomed. He is teriable even after 40 years of doing this he still can't get it done right ! We also bought a package that included Lodging & Meals, No heat in the room for two days ( they brought in a small space heater ) and the meals were not the best either.
Save your money & go to PowderHorn or Indianhead

I've been to Whitecap a few times and Indianhead a few times. I prefer Whitecap. The runs feel longer, it's really pretty, there are no lines and best thing ever is the wine hut. :) The lifts are old - but since there aren't any lines, they seem to move alright. I do not love the lift that goes from peak to peak though. The snow is always nice and their aren't a bunch of kids at 3pm skiing out of control to get as many runs in at the end of the day (as there are at Indianhead). The lodge gets crowded with peoples stuff, but I love that it's the honor system and you just stake a claim and leave your bags and shoes at a table. The bar at the Lodge is one of the best in the area and they have great beers on tap.
