Granite peak has improved allot over the old Rib Mountain. More runs, new lodge and better grooming. I've noticed some complaints about icy conditions and poor grooming. They groom every night what happens is that allot of people ski the same runs over and over again all day. Try moving to either the west or east end later in day and you will find some very fun runs that are not skied out.

Granite peak is over priced....over rated.....we live only an hour from the place...thought we'd give it another shot since the "expansion"...what a joke. We'd would rather drive to the upper penisula than pay $$$$$ for poor icy skiing and crabby employees.

Very much overpriced, and over promoted. Be Careful and view the weather conditions on weather.com because their website is very inaccurate. $56 to ski from 9 to 4 is very much a rip off for a resort that has slightly longer runs then devils head and barely any snow. They say 70'some runs, more like 40 with bunch off short cutoff (most of them steep at top them just long flat). Their vertical is also not what they advertise. $8.50 for two medium sodas is a crime. Someone below me stated that they never eat cheap at a ski resort, well then u are blind. In Michigan Peninsula I skied cheaper and longer, and eat cheaper, just one place to mention. Overall, I would not go there again rather spent my fuel and drive to Minnesota or Michigan Peninsula. I think that if you are going to pay Colorado prices might as well ski in Colorado, right? But if u go there take ur own food and water, and check the weather conditions at a reasonable source.

Steve (Minneapolis, MN , 21 Jan, 2008): Have been to GP several times since the expansion. The high speed lift and long runs allows for a ton of skiing in a short time. The lift is very fast, almost 10 mph. Takes only 4 minutes. No lift lines means a very high ski time to lift time ratio.
It does have a mountain feel. The knock on Rib is as almost everyone notices, it is unfortunate it gives up a lot of vertical early. When the conditions are fast this is less of a detractor.
Go to the east most area, and you will find the lift only covers the steeper parts. The variety of terrain is also good at this part.
The west part of the slopes is unfortunately a waste. The lift is slow and only the first third of the runs are worthwhile.
I found the overall conditions excellent. Rib is very large for the Midwest and if you pick the better portions, you will not find better skiing this close to Chicago. I do prefer Lutsen and Spirit, but they are quite a drive from Chicago (where I used to live).
Went with a group to Granite Peak on Saturday 2/23/08. 56 bucks after taxes is pretty steep for midwest sking, thats for sure. Signing a waiver that you won't sue them if your hurt is a joke as well. Never done that anywhere out west.
As far as the sking goes it's typical Wisconsin. Steep on top...quick downhill and then long and flat. The beginner stuff is always crowded on the weekends. You have to get off to either side for the black diamonds to avoid the crowds. They say 72 runs but alot of those are cut-offs. More like 45 runs probably. The 6 chair high speed lift is nice but usually crowded. They havd added some new bumps on some of the runs that suprised me.
Overall the problem is everywhere else is a longer drive from Green Bay and less runs. The slope faces north so it can be icy but if you have a recent snow it is not too bad. Buy your tickets on line. Cheaper by 4 bucks.

Granite Peak is over priced, over hyped, over estimated (700 feet, come on). They say they have tons of snow (lie) and even have the guts to compare themselves to out West resorts!

Terrible! Even though they had a lot of snow this past weekend, the ski conditions were horrible. It did not seem as if they groomed in several days. I askied someone who was there from Friday thru Sunday and Friday looked somewhat groomed but the rest of the weekend it was apparent they had not. Definitely not on Sunday when we were there. I asked a staff member on the phone how they were and they lied about it. Many runs were what I would consider un-skiable. The prices also were outrageous. Lifts $52, pitcher of beer $13, and a small 2 person pizza $15.50. Some of the staff were helpful and friendly but most of them were not at all friendly. Spend the extra driving time and go to the nicer resorts up in norther Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I will never again go to Granite Peak. It sucks!
This is a great place....never wait for the lift. If you want speed this is the place to go....and go fast. All other hill are trying to catch up to the great work they've done here. Check it out.

I spent three different days at GP last year spread over two months. Always brief lines all over the mountian. Great variety, longest runs in WI. Love the bar down below, they had music 2 of 3 times I was there. Lots of room for families to have lunch & store their gear. Should police the dining areas so people can not reserve tables though.

I've been going to Granite Peak for the last four years and keep coming back because I haven't found another resort within a reasonable drive of Chicago that surpasses it. The snow is always adequate (yes, with some occasional ice, this being the Midwest), the staff is cheerful and efficient, the high-speed 6-pack is a great luxury, and the ski school is very solid. Even on a busy Saturday (Jan. 26), the lift lines were never more than 5 or 10 minutes long. On the same trip, I also had one of the best private lessons I've ever had (including some I've had out West). My only complaint this time was that the rental boots my wife was given were very worn/packed down (even those she exchanged) and should have been retired. Improvements I'd like to see: more high-speed lifts, lodging at the mountain, and private lessons on weekends, which are not available. But I have recommended it to friends and will be back.
