Quads wouldn't work on the upper mtn. Most of the runs are rarely open, and snowmaking would only turn it into a giant windblown mass of concrete ala Sugarloaf's "Snowfields". What they need are lifts & trails in the vast areas between the mtns. upper morse too!
I read that everyone does'nt like the lifts that much at Smugglers, which are slow, but one benifit is that when you get off the lift you have the mountain to yourself, nice. The view of Mt Mansfield is spectacular. Great hill, great views, nice wide trails. We will be back.
Our family has been skiing Smuggs for over 10 years (daughter owns time share). The ski school is the best, condos nice, but the OLD lifts are awful, slow-small-and prone to breakdowns! I have skiied all over the NE and the lifts at Smuggs are the worst. Management is more interested in building condos then improveing the lifts. I go to Jay Peak for the lifts, lift prices, grooming. Smuggs could be the best, but they MUST improve the lifts!

The lifts are slow, but you make up for it with more solitude on the trails. Morse Mtn. is a great family and learning mountain and the upper mountains have fantastic terrain for hardcore skiers who relish bumps, chop, glades, and steeps. There are very few of the groomed "super highways" so common in Southern Vermont. If you want to get off the groomers and push your skiing to the next level, try Smuggs. (They have a terrific ski school that's not just for beginners and intermediates.)

I first skied at Smuggs in the late 70's and now come back every winter with my husband and two children. We have skied extensively in northern VT (Mad River Glen, Stowe, Sugarbush, Jay) and without a doubt Smuggs is the best family ski vacation we have found. The skiing is challenging - the way it used to be with limited grooming on the expert trails ( lots of bumps & tree skiing ) and the intermediate trails do have a higher degree of difficulty than intermediate trials found in mid and southern VT. Make no mistake, this is a skiers mountain! The bonus is the fabulous children's programs - great ski camps and top instructors. Mom & Dad can truly have a great ski vacation while the kids do too. The customer service is among the best I have found at any ski resort in the East or West, even over holiday periods. The lifts are old double chairs, but frankly I prefer having the trails left uncrowded even during holiday peak times - as compared to the Okemos of the sport where high speed quads dump masses of people on overcrowded slopes. And if you have any energy left after a day of skiing, there are great restaurants to choose from, a variety of evening activities are provided,
ranging from tubing, indoor water parks and kids' play zones, multiple teen centers, planned kids' programs . And you can always find special deals via the Smuggs web site, even over the peak holiday weeks. Year after year Smuggs is rated #1 in SKI Magazine for families and they live up to this reputation and beyond. Truly great skiing and a carefree atmoshphere where they take care of everything - a real vacation!
Smuggler's Notch is not the place to go to if you are a good skier and do not have a family. It is fantastic for family vacations, Summer & Winter. Go mid week and you feel as if you are the only person on the hill. The lodgings are fantastic and so are the restaurants. This place IS children friendly and hopefully it will stay that way. If you don't have kids, go to Stowe.
Not the place to go if you want fast lift rides. Its ridiculous how slow their lifts are. Last year I skied here for the first, and the last time. The terrain was ok. We had a nice 6 inches of powder the first day, but it was gone by the afternoon. It is hard to get from one side of the mountain to the other. I would recommend going to Killington which is closer to people from down south, if not Killington either Loon in NH or Stowe is good as well.

We went to Smugglers Notch a few years ago but I have to admit I am a Colorado fan. I made one run down the mountain and decided it was too cold for me. The trails seemed very icy and I never have heard anyone talk about alot of fresh powder there. Although, The lifts were fast and none of the trails were TOO snowless. The resteraunts were also nice and the scenery was beautiful.

Over the Christmas Break me and my family went to Smuggs. Although the mountain was very nice, the lifts were extremely slow. You sit on the lifts more than you actually ski. Also, to get to Madonna from Morse mountain and back is a big pain. It is almost completely flat. Overall, we had a decent experience at Smuggs.
