Five of us drove over 400 miles from southern PA for a mini ski vaction at Okemo. It had been many, many years since we were there (we ski mostly in Colorado) and we had a wonderful time at the friendly family resort. Even though the weather (it rained every day) did not cooperate we were able to enjoy ourselves tremendously. We skied near the summit since it was snowing in the higher altitude. We took advantage of the Sleep and Ski packages offered by the resort and the hotel, which saved hundreds of dollars, took advantage of the garbage bag slickers provided by the resort to keep us dry, and we skied in endless well groomed slopes as much as we could. There were no lift lines to speak of, and we were able to traverse the entire ski area a couple of times. There were no crowds, lots of friendly folks, okay food (expensive but okay) and a great Hotel, The Point, about 2 1/2 miles from the slopes, and almost free skiing. Ludlow is a great town, and we can't wait to do it again next year. Thanks Okemo.

I thought we were through for the year, but it was such a nice day we headed to Okemo because it was a bit closer than where I would normally go. Only two words to describe it "tired and boring." Slush was the only way to describe the snow, and we couldn't find a trail that hadn't been groomed or had any slope to it. We were amused by what they call a black diamond trail. Speak of grade inflation. I had also heard great things, but after skiing there, I would call it all "Smokemo and mirrors!" In fairness the people were very nice.
For the prior three years I had a season pass to Killington. Fearing bad things from the new owners in 2007/2008 ( I was right), I decided to try Okemo. While there is no doubt that Killington is a much bigger, more diverse and much more challenging mountain, Okemo provides a far more pleasant experience. Grooming is superior, people are actually nice, the lines are usually not bad, and people in line are corteous, even the snowboarders are more tolerable. Unless you are a super expert, you will definetely enjoy Okemo, though after a few days, it will get a little boring.
Okemo is a very friendly mountain. What I value most of any ski resorts is: Food Services (Okemo has large veriety), Children Ski School (Snow Stars is simply the best, and they remember names of your kids next season, wow!!), Snow Grooming (unmatched in the East Coast), Infrastructure (above adequate), Lift Lines (adequate) and environment and attitude of the crowds (Okemo ambassadors will rightfully yell at youngsters resting horizontally in the middle of the trails.) As far as snow fall, we all are under creator's mercy. For managing kid's centers, food and lodge services, busing to/from parking lots: "Job Well Done, Okemo" My only pet peeves are the lodging rates (ridiculously high, even non-holiday and off-season). Lift ticket rates are about the average though. I will keep coming back to Okemo for more happy skiing, and even more so for seeing "skiing happiness" on my little son's face.

Okemo is an Indian word meaning "flat mountain". People complain that it's dangerous to ski. That's because the only way to get exhilaration is to ski/board at 100mph. There is no challenge otherwise. Everyone thinks they're an expert because the terrain is flat and groomed out. If you skied one trail you've skied them all. They are all the same. It's a joke to see the trails they rate as black diamond or double black. I'd have no problem bringing a novice on any of them. Lot's of high speed lifts though. People seem to love it, judging by the weekend crowds. That a good thing. It leaves more room for me at the other more challenging and diversified ski area in New England.

Okemo is tops for snow-making and grooming. It is true, alot of the trails are wide predictable boulevards, but there are steeps, and glades and moguls (machine made and natural). Overall it's my favorite in the East. Stratton is too many Escalades and Fur-trimmed trophy wives. Tip - get away from the base ASAP. The Mountain road gets crowded in the afternoon. Pipe shredders, Pee-Wees and families congregate there.
If your entire group is experts, maybe try somewhere else. But, if you want a place for Mop, Pop and the kids from hotdog big brother racer to never-ever little sis', this is the place.

Much too crowded on Saturdays. Many riders out of control.
My wife and I have been skiing Okemo for the last 6 yrs at least 5-6 times each season as we are midweek season pass holders. But last weekend decided to venture out on Saturday only to be very disappointed and found it to be dangerous at times with boarders and skiiers almost crashing into us on 2 separate occassions. Both situations could of been a disaster. Too many ,too fast and with mountain patrol doing their job. Something has to be done if Okemo wants to keep us and many like us coming back.

Okemo is way too crowded on the weekends and they do a horrible job of crowd control. Many packs of teenage kids are overtaking this mountian and making it less and less of a family mountain. The staff needs to step it up a notch and control this situation before somone gets hurt very badly. I have seen packs of snowboarders clog up trails and knock small children down in there wake!!

My son and I wanted to try a different mountain over Feb vacation. Having Skied this year at Mt Snow and Stratton we dicided to go to Okemo. I had never been to Okemo but always wondered about it as I was passing it to go to Killington. I decided on Okemo because of thier reputation for grooming. We originally wanted to go on Monday 2-18 but it rained all day. So we went out on Tuesday 2-19. I expected the trails to be Icy and the terain to be difficult. I must say I was impressed with the conditions of the trails with all of the rain the prior day. The south peak area was less crowded but very very icy. We found the Jackson gore area to be much better and actually pretty good for the way it rained. The lower half of jackson gore (learning area) was awefull very very icy (no fault of Okemo). We had a fun day and spent very little time in line. I do have to say that I probably won't go back anytime soon. Not at all due to the conditions but more to the Lift layout. There is not many if any lifts you can take top to bottom. So you spend the day always skiing either the upper half or the bottom half. This was dissapointing to me. A few of the lifts are very very very slow. I go to the big mountains because I like it to take longer to get down the mountain than it does to get up. With some of the tripples there I felt I could walk up faster. What would it take for me to come back ? New lifts replace the old 1950's tripples with some highspeed quads. I like the mountain and the trail they are definatly more advanced than say Stratton. But just hated the convoluted layout. I would also agree with the last poster I was there on a not so busy day and thought mountain road was over crowded can not imagine a weekend.
Okemo is a great intermediate mountain. Boring if you are more of an expert and want variety and dangerous if you are a beginner on a busy weekend. I was there with my son (newer snowboarder) on Sunday, Feb. 17. It was scary. They are way over selling tickets. On Mountain Road, the only top to bottom beginner trail, but also the trail used to navigate from one part of the mountain to the next, there were so many people that you could not deviate from your track to the left or right. At one point we had to cross it while on a blue square trail and my son had to wait about 10 minutes for a break in people just to get by. The lift at the base was so crowded we walked up to a higher lift on the side to save ourselves what looked like an hour wait. Don't EVER go there on a holiday weekend or a Saturday. I have been there other times on Saturdays and it is bad then too. It is a great, nicely groomed mountain on weekdays when you can move around, although a bit dull if you are a more advanced skier.
