I liked the story about being wiped out on the easiest slopes. Very funny, had a few myself! I've been going to Ober with my family and friends for 19 years as of Monday, February 4, 2008 and I guess you could say, we've come along way from blue jeans to ski suits. We haven't invested in equipment yet, so we still rent but it is worth if for a 6 hr drive to have some fun all day for the price. I've been to other resorts and for the south it is pretty good. It does get crowded on weekends so weekdays are much better. I wished it didn't get so icy but you can't help it with the weather conditions. The staff is nice and friendly although most of them are from another country and can't understand much of what we say, but they smile anyway. The ski patrol are helpful and fun to watch ski as well. I've been assisted many times through the years. Thank the Lord, I've never broken a bone or hit a pole but people and the orange barriers are another story. By the way, they need to add the orange barriers down the side of mogule ridge on the right side to keep people from sliding off the cliff like me! I'm sure the resort could do some renovations and updates but it's like everything and everybody, who wants to spend money? As far as the $10.00 charge for parking, I think it's bogusly ridiculous, especially if your only staying a few minuets to look around. Definitely need more parking space somewhere? The fire place is wonderful to warm up by and the lounge is nice and relaxing at night or day. We always stay a Jack Huff Motor Lodge behing the Pancake Pantry. Our favorite each year. Love Sweet Fanny for their polish sausage and footlong corn dogs, all is a gotta have. Even when it's cold we love Baskin Robbins Ice Cream. The fudge is always wonderful. Gatlinburg is a must. The town and MT's are a wonderful place to visit. I guess that's why we try to go back each year. Hope this was helpful.

Killing the Spirit!!
While my family was vacationing up in Gatlinburg over the Holidays, I was hoping to get some snowboarding in and to expose my 4 year old son to the sport for the first time. Unfortunately the weather was too warm for them to make snow until the 2nd of January, after a cold front had passed through. Living in Florida keeps us from hitting the slopes every weekend but we usually make it out west for at least a week each year. With this in mind, I simply purchased a small plastic snowboard for my son at the local Wal-mart store and then proceeded to Ober to hit the slopes. The upper parking lot was full so we had to pay $10 to park below and then pay again to take the tram up to the top after a two and a half hour wait. Ordinarily, I probably wouldn't have waited so long, had it not been for my son being so excited about his first stint on the slopes. We muscled our way through the crowds at the top, I purchased a lift ticket for myself, and we then proceeded to the entrance of the slope. I told the lady that my son would not be taking any lifts and she and another person let us go by. The bottom of the slope was just around the corner. We got about 10 yards from the very bottom of the slope where I gave my son his first instructions. He slipped his boots into the straps and I gave him a little push. He started to go by himself at a nice little steady pace with me walking right next to him all the way. He would go about 4-6 feet, fall over, I would pull him back up and he would do it again, another 4 to 6 feet. When we finally reached the bottom, he said he wanted to do it again. The joy on his snowcovered face was priceless. So we walked back up about 10 yards and did it again. Each time he would go a little further without falling but never going faster than I could follow. He made everyone around smile with his determination.
After about 45 minutes, a ski lift operator came running over. He proceeded to tell my why I couldn't use that board on the slope. He said the rail wasn't made of metal so my son wouldn't be able to stop. I was astonished. I explained that he was only 4 and couldn't go more than all of 2 miles per hour being at the bottom of the hill and when he wanted to stop, he simply fell over - and I stayed next to him. Now I can understand not letting people on the lifts and on the slopes with this kind of equipment but we were no threat to anyones safety being at the bottom. But it was like talking to Barney Fife about the dangers of jaywalking while there was a shootout occuring at the bank all around us. Beginners were everywhere, screaching, tumbling, and stumbling down the hill from above. If anything, I was more worried about my son's safety than the possibility of his massive 40 lb frame taking someone else out.
So I asked to speak with a manager but the lift operator said he was skiing. Go figure. So I went up to the entrance and asked to speak to a supervisor. Three gangly looking guys came up and said the same thing. One guy was looking for a confrontation. He was itching to take my pass away but I kept my cool and tried to talk reason into them. Another guy told me that all of the slopes worldwide were governed by the FCC and they had to abide by their rules. I asked what FCC stood for but he wasn't sure. Strange, I thought to myself, that the FCC not only governed the airwaves in this country, but they also controlled the slopes. So I asked Mr. FCC if they had boards small enough for my son to rent. We went over to the rental place and the guy said he could probably fit him but we had to go to the cashier first. The line again was incredibly long and by now my patience was gone. We left soon afterwards in disgust.
My son was crushed that he couldn't snowboard after I hyped it up for weeks. Unfortunately we had to depart the next day.
What has happened to the free spirit in this country? Have we thrown all reason, logic, and sense of adventure out of the window?
If only I had so many pathetic rules to live by when I was growing up. Perhaps I could have been a head ski lift operator with only 6 teeth to worry about instead of being retired at the age of 45.
Unbelievable!

Me and my friends are hardcore snowboarders, we're spoiled by the big mountains up north and out west, but we live in Knoxville and Ober is less than an hour away. We had season passes this year, and every Saturday we were there as soon as it opened and left when it closed. The mountain is very small but it's good for this far south, and when you compare it to the other mountains around here like Cataloochee, which is only slightly bigger but way more packed, Ober is nice. Also, Ober is different than any other mountain...you'll be sitting on the ski lift and the crazy redneck kids will fly down the mountain and nail someone. So, if you are a decent skiier or snowboarder stay off the easy trails to avoid being nailed, and believe me, you will get nailed if you go on an easy run, it happens all the time. (P.S.-if your looking for a terrain park, Ober isn't the mountain you want to visit, they don't have one.)
We had a wonderful time. I went with my children and grandchildren. It was fun for the whole family, all 13 of us. Between skiing and ice skating and then eating the snow, my whole family had a great time. We will have great memories. We are from Florida and none of us are very good at skiing but the trails were fine to learn on and before long we almost looked professional. Even my little 4 year old grand daughters were skiing on the easiest hills. That was a hoot. My 2 year old grand daughter just liked the taste of the snow and she was happy. The town was very busy on the week ends and I must say interesting. During the week it wasn't busy at all. The FlapJack House was great and the frozen waterfalls were a wonder. We hiked the half frozen river and drove up the smokey mts and went sledding that ended in a good old fashioned snowball fight. We took the scenic tram ride and the pictures are priceless now. Some things are pricey but hey thats what happens on a vacation. We will definately do this again.

My wife and I went to Ober for our first ski vacation. It was her first time to ski so I was a little worried because I read some bad reports on the resort. I have to say that I am so happy we desided to go to Ober. It is a great resort with lots to choose from and lots to do. The skiing was very fun and even when it was packed you could still pretty much ski right up to the lift. During the week its not busy at all until school lets out and all the local kids come to ski and board but they are all really nice and fun to watch. If you go to Ober for vacation I sugest you stay at the Hampton Inn in Gatlinburg. It's a very nice hotel and it's next door to the tram station. All you have to do is wake up and walk outside and your there. We stayed in Knoxville about 45 minutes away because I'm a huge vols fan. Over all I would give Obergatlinburg a B+. It was very nice and fun.

Gatlinburg is a nice place to visit. Just keep a few things in mind: Parking at Obergatlinburg is VERY limited. Be prepared to park at the bottom of the hill and ride the tram to the top. During peak season, riding the tram usually requires a 2 hour wait in line. Next, the hill at Gatlinburg is small. It's not like most large resorts with many trails to choose. Ober counts 1 long trail as two trails, upper and lower. Lift lines usually aren't long but there are many people on the trails. Night skiing is fun and most of the trails are lighted but be prepared for icy conditions. That is just the nature of the climate almost year round. Best recommendation: rent a cabin and arrive at Obergatlinburg at 9AM and be prepared to stay all day. Once you decide to rest from skiing or ice skating, you can simply ride the tram down into town and check out the local flavor. Practically everything is within walking distance once you leave the tram station. It's a great place to take the family as long as you keep those few simple recommendations in mind. Overall rating based on environment and nightlife B- but overall skiing rating would have to be D+
