since im a local i find whitetail one of the best resorts around. the terrain park in mid-winter,late winter is one of the best around some rails will have gaps and some dont. the jumps are big during this time of winter. they have good double black diamonds and blacks good beginner mountain but can be challenging due to ice. needs to lower prices on food and lift tickets.staff are freindly and fast working
I went for the day on 01/14/2007. To my delight there were 8 runs open and 4 lifts operating. Conditions were Spring like considering the weather of late. I did not expect anything. The snow crew does a wonderful job with their snow making and grooming. There is plenty of terraine to hone skills on and vertical runs around 1000'. I passed the resort up for years and then discovered it last season as it is 37 miles from my house. I have skied since 1973, spent 7 years full time on the slopes in Alaska and Michigan, chased around major resorts on three continents and find that most of them are a series of interconnecting runs and trails. You push around until you find terrain that suits you and then work it. Whitetail certainly fills that bill. Buy an Advantage Cards and do nights and weekdays.

Perfect for begginer families, although not too great for the experts.

AWESOME!!! We have been going to Whitetail resort for YEARS, and it has never been better!! It may be crowded on the weekends, but their slopes are absolutely fantastic. Could not be better!

I live about thirty minutes south of DC, and can get to Whitetail in about an hour and a half. Not a bad little place although it does get crowded on weekends. The Whitetail staff does a good job of keeping the slopes groomed although on a busy weekend, the more popular trails can be completely overrun by minimoguls by midday, and things can get a little icy at night. Not bad at for a day trip, but when I manage to hit the road early enough I'll usually drive right past Whitetail and head to Wisp instead.

When I go to Whitetail, I don't bother going during the day. If you have the vision to be able to ski at night this is a great place to do it. After 7pm there are rarely any lift lines and I have made up to 25 runs in a 5 hour session. It's less crowded which allows the luxury of avoiding the icy spots too.

This mole hill is quite laughable. I can't believe the reviews. The best closest to DC? It's the only resort closest to DC so I guess that title could go to anyone.
If you like paying $51 for 31 second runs, and hitting 4 trails for 4 hours... This is your resort. The snowboard park is rutted out, they put the park on flat hill so you can't get any speed to hit the jumps. The rails are all ride-on. It's crowded, and the main run gets mogeled out after two hours. Don't bother wasting your money on an 8 hour pass for $4 more. You'll be bored after 10 minutes. You should ask if they have a one hour flex pass for $10.
Oh and if you bring a group, other resorts discount 30-50%. Not here. You get $5 off. They've raised lift ticket prices without adding any more offerings, so if you want to play frogger on mashed potatoes, this hill is just for you. Just be sure to shell out $51 for four hours, and $40 for just boot rentals (my friend had to rent snowboard boots). She ended up buying a new pair for $120.
The whole mountain is a gyp. Go somewhere else. Wisp is only 2.5 hours from DC and Seven Springs is about the same. I'd say the extra hour of driving is well worth it, and it costs the same.

Whitetail is the DC/Baltimore/Northern VA's best ski resort closest to home (about 1.5 hour drive from each). They have a high speed quad, which makes getting some vertical in, easy. I can buy a 4hr ticket and take 20+ runs of 900ft each, and be home by 2:30pm on a weekend. The terrain park is really nice and lately it's been one of the first parts of the mountain to open when snowmaking permits. You are lucky to get any natural snow here on the MD/PA border, but when it does happen, even this place feels like a little slice of heaven, and you can't beat the travel time. It lacks a few ammenities which I think would be nice, such as a bar in the lodge for a little Apre. Liberty has the bar, and is a half hour closer, but they have only slow lifts. Also the halfpipe is only open maybe 2 weeks out of the year, and when it is, is never recut, and very poorly maintained. Great for begginers to intermediate riders.

"Nothing close comes close" rings true for Whitetail Ski Resort. Whitetail is a day trip ski resort for the Washington / Baltimore area. You get 935 vertical feet, a high speed quad & a terain park. With the high speed quad you can easily ski 40,000 + vertical feet in a day.
