Was at Elk on 3/23 (Easter Sunday). The place was a ghost town so there was absolutely no waiting. Conditions were what you'd expect this late in what has been a bad snow season. Overall the conditions were excellent. Some spots of ice, which would have been worse if the crowds were heavy. Was told they may be open until 3/29.
Elk has no equal in PA. Sorry, but Montage (or Sno, whatever they call it) is just weak. Camelback is far to crowed with too many merging trails. Blue Knob has no variety and the rest are just tiny, with the exception of Blue Mountain which is nice but too crowded.
Having just gotten back from Breckenridge and Keystone, it's tough to ski PA, but Elk has some decent steeps, good cruising runs, a good quaility of skier, and is a remarkably easy mountain to navigate. Reminds me of a smaller version of Stratton.
Friends in Colorado joke that they've got bumper stickers that play on the old PA state tagline. It goes: "You've got a friend in Pennsylvania...who skis in jeans". I admitted that I did many times.
My son and I ski 40 days a year, some in NY some in PA. Elk is not high on our list. Went to Elk on WVIA day tkis year, half the mountain was green. Sno mountain's lower mountain kicks Elk' butt. Sno's terrain park makes Elk' a joke. Belleayre mt will be sking 30 trails in April when all of Pa is closed. So if your coming from the south stop at Sno or head to NY.
We drove into town Feb 29th - it was snowing which really got us in the mood for skiing. We hit the slopes the following morning (Saturday, March 1st) and it was great. In the morning there were no lift lines to speak of. We waited no more than 60 seconds to get on a lift up until almost lunch time. The snow was excellent and the trails are exciting. Our only ski experiences prior to Elk have been at Roundtop. Roundtop is fine but the Elk experience is much more fun. The night skiing was not the best because there are only a few slopes open, but who cares - the day skiing was great! The lodge is OK, nothing special. The food, while not spectacular, was reasonably priced. The ski shop prices were fair - I bought the wife a pair of Oakley goggles for 39 bucks. We stayed at the Wiffy Bog and highly recommend staying there. Accommodations were very comfortable and the breakfast was great. Do you self a favor and check out Elk Mountain and the Wiffy Bog!
I went to Elk Mountain on the Sunday of President's Day weekend and I could not have had a better experience. The lift lines were relatively short for a holiday weekend. The snow was excellent for the East Coast. The staff was friendly and very willing to help.
The feel of Elk Mountain is of a "throwback" ski resort which I think adds to the charm. The lodge is very busy at lunch time and the prices are typical of any ski resort (high).
The black diamonds are challenging and the runs are decently long for PA skiing. I would not recommend bringing a beginner to Elk. There is a bunny hill for learning, but after you progress past that level, there are very few green circle trails.
Elk Mountain is well worth the extra 45 minute drive from the Philadelphia area. I look forward to going back to Elk before the end of the season!
All I can say is THANKYOU elk, for you saved me, Im only sorry you where the last place we skied befor returning to Texas. I was giving up on PA. and we had a storm come in the night befor and told the family lets give it a try. WoW the best little mountain I have ever seen even better than Sante Fe and the staff was great and I tell this story to my friends and they say elk, whats that even my PA. friends dont know about elk. I must say best kept secert around and if we visit friends again we can be found at elk! see ya thier.

Was up to ski Elk the week of Feb 11, 2008. With warm weather and some rain, the Elk employees did a great job of maintaining good ski conditions. This was my 2nd time to Elk. The mountain IS the best ski experience in eastern, PA. The staff is helpful and friendly. My family and I definitely plan to ski Elk again.

SHHHHHH...don't spread the good word too far, I'll just be waiting for you in the lift lines. Great family resort, my kids love it. They can ski by themselves and we feel comfortable knowing they're safe and sound with all the excellant mountain staff on hand. Very family friendly mountain, no real nightlife to speak of which is fine with us.

Elk Mountain is a very nice place to go skiing especially when it snows the day before! Many people including we enjoy the snow covered trees. For the lodge, we enjoy their HOT CHOCOLATE big time!! That's what we enjoy looking forward to when we walk into the lodge! We wish there were more ski lifts to get around but if its incovienent, then we understand!! We come here every holiday well New Years for 2 WEEKS!
I don't know why some posters are reviewing Elk as if it is a western resort. It's not and you'd be nuts to think it was. It is however PA's best skiing and really does have the feel of skiing in New England. It might be slightly shorter then Blue Mountain but it's runs are a lot longer and its snow is infinitely better!
