This is my 49th year of skiing at Bachelor.
I was a member of the Ski Patrol for 10 years, two as a paid patrolman.
Lots of changes for sure! Also have had the pleasure of knowing all the Presidents and General Mangers personally.
The Mountain is being operated by looking at the yearly bottom line since Powder Corp took over.
Some what hard for all the NEW locals to except.
I would like to have the good old days back also; however, I find life even as a skier brings changes too fast!
The man that made the place pay for itself season after season by being the best operation in the Northwest was Cliff Blann. He has two sons still active in the industry. One is Mountain Manger at Heavenlly Valley
and other President of Jackson Hole. Look at trail maps and ski run and see the similar facilites.

What a day! Yesterday I rode Bachelor in the afternoon. Slighty overcast with no wind - the snow was fast and the terrain was spectacular. It's hard to take people seriously who only visit Bachy for the tubing! You can go for free at one of the snow parks and it's a better workout. The Summit chair has been open for two weeks straight! From the top of Summit down it's got to be longest run in Oregon. Finally we get some Tahoe weather and no lines! The new park off I-5 is sick!

I took my family to the TubeBlast tubing park on New Year's Eve, 2007. We waited 40 minutes just to buy a ticket. The tube lifts were constantly breaking down, and one of the staff members there told me it was because the staff loading the lift had no idea how to do it. There were supposed to be 8 staff there, and only 4 were present; out of those 4, only 2 were trained on that part of the park. My two developmentally disabled family members were scared to ride because the lift would break down halfway up, their tubes would pop off the cable, and they would fall down the slope next to the lift. There was no attempt by management to "cut off" the new tickets being sold (as they say they do in their literature) in order to reduce wait time. We paid $175 for 6 full-day passes, and each got in only 9 runs down. It was a terrible value, and was even dangerous at times when the lift broke, or when the overloaded cable would crush your leg or arm against the tube on the way up. We will NOT be returning.

I have skied at Mt. Bachelor for more than 30 years. The mountain has some great terrain and some of the best snow in the Pacific NW. I taught both of my kids to ski there. That said, the resort has taken a significant turn for the worse since it was taken over by Powdr Corp. a few years ago. The lifts breakdown continuously and are undermanned; on snow "hosts" have disappeared; the food service is crowded, slow, expensive and of very poor quality relative to most of the better resorts in the west. The resort can't even maintain the 'green dots' on the socked in traverses. Any complaints about the foregoing will get you a chit for a free hot chocolate, but not much more. $66 for an adult ticket during the holidays seems awful expensive diven all this. The skuttlebutt is that Powdr Corp. is using Mt. Bach as a cash cow and shifting the cash to its other operations in Colorado. If you are thinking about skiing in the Pacific NW, save up for Whistler or head to Crystal Mtn- at least until Powdr Corp sells Mt. Bach or turns its operations around.

I've been skiing Bachelor for 36 years. It has been one of my favorite places to ski. However, since it was purchased a few years ago, the resort has slowly gone down hill. The employee's seem to hate what they do and this year there aren't enough of them to keep up with the needs of the mountain, especially maintainance! On Decmeber 31, 2007 (the worst experience I've ever had skiing), the crowds were huge. The sunrise chair didn't operate until 1pm and the rainbow chair kept breaking down. I spent 45 minutes towards the top of that chair with my grandkids contemplating jumping off the lift before we froze. By the time we got off, we were so cold we went in, which was 12pm. Thats right one run since we arrived at 9am that morning. Wow, unbelievable!

On the bright side, it does dump often and the powder is as good as anywhere. On a sunny day after a big dump, the Summit chair is where to be, cranking runs in the bowl and back side. The views are spetacular too.

My suggestion, don't go to Bachelor during the Holidays!!!!

I'm a local and have skied Mt. Bachelor since the 60's, so I have some perspective about the place. It has always been an awesome mountain, but over the years the weather has gradually gotten worse in the winter, with much more wind and zero viz. conditions. And, the crowds have grown along with the town. Nothing can be done about those things but the MANAGEMENT needs to step up and handle its current crisis, which is poor and inadequate staffing of the facilities. Against better judgement, I tried to ski there on new year's eve morning. The crowd was enormous and there wasn't even anyone manning the lift lines at Outback, only one person loading chairs. Are you kidding me? There must have been 300 people jammed up there trying to get on the chair and NO staff to control the situation. This is just an example of how the place is seriously going downhill. It appears $ is the only thing that matters to the new owners, not the quality of the mountain experience. Everyone I talked to on the chairs felt the same way. Many were tourists, too. WAKE UP MT. BACHELOR before your obsession with the almighty dollar ruins the mountain for all of us. Hire more and better trained staff before your frugality ruins the mountain as well as your bottom line.

I have skied for 40 plus years all over the US and Europe. I have been skiing at Batchelor for the past 10 years and live part time in the area. The mtn is beautiful and has some great terrain. Summit is often closed in winter. The winds can be fierce. I have found the employees to be great and am surprised by the negative comments in other reviews about them. The Chileans last year were really fun and friendly. This year has had its problems and I am hearing a lot of locals saying they will go to Hoodoo because of it's great staff and low prices. My perception is that the new mgmt is concentrating on the visitors and not the locals. Too bad. The lines are really only long at xmas, t-day and 1 week of spring break. More plowing on the main road would be good!

Great, family friendly mountain. Good terrain for advanced (The Cirque Bowl at the Summit can be spectacular when open, Northwest has decent runs also), intermediate (Outback and Pine Marten) and begining skiers (rest of the mountain).
The biggest problem is the wind and winter weather, plus poor management. There is usually only the main lift (Pine Marten) open in the morning, and the other chairs don't open until 10:30 at best, but sometimes as late as 2 PM (closes at 3:45); there is always a "reason" such as ice or wind, but the reality is that you can have 20 minute lines on Pine Marten and there is no other place to go. The summit is (almost) NEVER open during the winter. For example, Dec 31, 07: Beautiful sunny day, no wind, piles of light fluffy snow; unbearable and poorly managed lines everywhere... Summit chair is closed... WHY?? (people are already there... cost of running a 300 chair lift...you tell me)
The other problem is that with traffic, you have a 45-60 min drive to and from the mountain from Bend or Sunriver, which is a bit of a hassle.
Then again, a lift ticket is $66...

Yeah they might have new mngmt, but it's not looking good so far. Either they need to hire more employees, start earlier, or pay them more money, or all of the above, because they still cant get the mountain open in time. So what happens? Pine gets tracked out and overcrowded because outback and nw cant open on time, outback opens late but no nw so outback gets flooded with long lines, an hour later or more nw opens gets flooded and tracked out with long lines. And dont think its the weather, last monday was blue bird with just the above senario. And on the same day they didn't open the summitt at all. So by noon on blue bird pow day bachelor has long lines, broken down lifts, and it all tracked up. Good thing they raised all their prices again this year.
