Huntahhhh...may be a lousy mountain but at least it is our mountain (people from Northern NJ and New York know what I mean).
Here are the facts:
*Brutal on weekends because of impossible lines and teenagers in jeans and NY Rangers' jerseys yelling,"Yo Vinnie I am skiing!" while going a 150 mph.
*Little snow. The snow totals are complete BS. Be prepared for rocket launching pactches of ice and crud even when they clain a "powder day."
*Night life used to be lengendary but now, because of the several lousy seasons, has all but disappeared. It is a ghost town. Depressing.
*Lodge is circa 1975. Amenities are sub-standard. Food is mediocre.
On the plus side......
*Reasonably close to the tri-state area. Certainly within day trip range.
*If you can ski here you can ski anywhere due to the ice, tight trails and crowds. My fondest memory of this past season is ripping down the powder laden trails my first day at Heavenly without breaking a sweat and turning my friend and saying,"Geez. That was fun, wasn't it?"
*Incentive to work harder, invest wiser and save in a more disciplined manner in order to afford more frequent trips to Park City, Tahoe, etc.
Thanks Hunter for a great ski day on March 30th 2008. Open slopes were in nice shape. Hunter west was a blast. Late season is the time to ski ,no crowds, nice weather, free tickets. Can't understand other reviews regarding stolen equipment, since they have free ski check. We will be back next season often!!

Planning on hitting Hunter Wednesday, 4/2. Expect it will be GREAT! (read Tony Tiger). Not put off by ice, crowds, limited access or any of that stuff. Shut up you whiners! Call me Repete.
No snow except on the trails. Immediately turns to slush when the sun is out. If lift D is closed then no access to the middle blues. Sushi bar was closed. Won't go back til next season

Skied Hunter on Sat. 3/22/08. Tried the whole mountain, except the West side.
The snow conditions were horrible...all hard ice with loose frozen granular. Even when it warmed up in the pm, the granular just became a bit slushy, but never had the feeling of snow. We were just scrapping on ice all day.
Lots of out of control boarders and skiiers made it dangerous with those conditions.
Don't ski here unless you don't mind the icy conditions, or if they get at least 10 inches of snow.

Went on Easter Sunday and there was not a lot of snow. Most of the easy trails had ice and grass patches (didn't go on any of the harder trails).

Hadn't been to Hunter since i was a kid and made it back there this year.
The Friday i skied there it was wonderful, lots of new snow, no crowding, my kids and i had a blast. Then came Saturday! Oh my gosh, was it awful! I haven't seen a more crowded mountain with horrible skiers in about 20 years! It was downright dangerous. My daughter almost got clobbered on "belt parkway" by an out of control boarder! The slopes were overgroomed and icy. Where had all the fresh powder gone? The element of "skier" at Hunter left a lot to be desired. Lots of lousy, obnoxious skiers ,bragging about skiing dangerously and above their ability in overcrowded conditions and many of them drinking in the a.m. We left early. You couldn't pay me to ski there on any weekend!!

I've skiied all my life, I"m 51.Hunter is a skiiers mt. I read a review that it had too may moguls! Shut up and ski, the area is the best skiing within 5 hours from NYC and you can be on the snow from there in 2 1/2 hours! The food is pricy but the veriety is abounding, wraps, soups, even sushi. As far as new skiiers, there is an entire area with 5 lifts for beginners and to boot a new lodge exclusively dedicated to learners! I loved Hunter and will be there many times to come. If you like to ski and know how to ski/snowboard, get to Hunter.
Went to Hunter Mountain last weekend. The conditions were great - the snowstorm added fresh powder to the already groomed trails. There was plenty of side trails that offered nearly private skiing. We stayed at Hunter Mountain Rentals at Hunter Highlands on the mountain and were able to access the beginner slope from the top parking lot - very convenient, clean, and reasonable condo, with spectacular views. You have to know the slopes to enjoy them - get there early, ski the main slopes and afterwards go to the side trails for private skiing - can't complain. Got my money's work skiing all day and relaxing at the condo. Fireworks, band, and rail jam were great too.

Visited Hunter last week and had an awesome time. Lessons for my kids were great. Terrain is great especially for the Catskills. Could update a lift or 2 and the food is severely lacking in quality compared to price. Overall a great day on the snow. I will be back.
