Wow, we have visited my brother and his family who live in Ameherst as we are British and live in the UK. He took us skiing at Holiday Valley. We have skied in Europe and most of it is queue jumping and pushing. Well Holiday Valley.. you are polite, friendly and cheerful. We thoroughly enjoyed our 2 days skiing with you. The snow was excellent and the people both skiers and Holiday Valley employees were friendly and nice. It was great fun (the lady on the chairlift at the nursery slopes well YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY NUTS!!). The only negative is that the nursery slopes are a little short and snow canons could go on both side of the chair lift to give more space!!.
Thanks again. We hope that it was our first BUT CERTAINLY NOT OUR LAST. Wouldnt mind moving to Amherst permantly. See you all soon we hope. The Rigg family.
I live in Pittsburgh,PA and about 5 times per winter i go to Holiday Valley. I just went on March 6th and it was wonderful skiing. The terrain parks are very sticky though but the downhills are great.
I'm 52 years old and grew up in New England and have skied at most of the resorts there and worked at quite a few to get through college. HV doesn't have much vertical but, it has a wide variety of terrain and good uphill capacity. The older I get my brain writes checks my body can't cash. So the shorter runs are fine. I put as much emphasis now on the lodges (bars) as I do the skiing and and at HV and Ellicottville they rival anything anywhere for a good time. My wife Julia and I are Realtors on Chautauqua Lake 45 minutes away and we like Ellicottville so much we just purchased a fractional at the Tamarack Club.
Assuming these ratings are relative to EASTERN US skiing, HV is certainly a great resort offering fun skiing for all ages. They invest in high-quality snow makers, lighting, groomers, lodges (Yodeler Bar!) and lifts (mostly quads, 2 high-speed). It does get quite crowded on long weekends, but there are lifts (like Chute and Eagle) that access great skiing and never have long lines. Keep in mind the more crowded, the better apres ski. Best part? Ellicottville. My personal favorite ski town in the US because of its timeless grittiness and its lack of touristy nonsense and pretension. Great place to rent a house and bring the family. Don't come until after mid-January but check out Octoberfest Weekend

It's a good resort for the location. They make a lot of snow so even when you get the crappy northeastern weather you can still ski. There are a lot of runs for the size of the hill most are short but the lifts move pretty fast, and most are quads. There is a variety of terrain for beginners to advanced skiers, there are some steep hills they are just a little short. It is a little expensive but night skiing is pretty cheap and they do a good job of lighting up the mountain. They do a pretty louse job with the terrain parks. Generally the landing are horrible and the table tops tend to be too big for the average person who is going to hit it. Over all though a nice place to go for skiing.

Holiday Valley is a good place to ski and to hang out, too. It's modern and large, with several lodges, runs, and lifts. The best part? Fast, modern ski lifts that accomodate a lot of people efficiently. The lines are never "too long." Mardi Gras is the main, long slope that is perhaps the best known, most used slope there; it's ok, but the one right next to it is my absolute favorite (it's narrower and less steep, but has a nice big drop off at the very end that gets you going fast). If you do go to this resort, I recommend staying in town at the fairly new Wingate Inn-- a great hotel within walking distance of downtown Ellicottville, which has a lively, easy-going daytime and nighttime "scene." Overall, a cool place to spend time...the "Aspen" of the East.

Went up on Sunday and Monday (MLK Day) and the conditions were great. However, many slopes still not open....base is not very deep. Many glade runs closed, but you can make your own in several areas. They seem to offer good packages when not all the slopes are open. We got $55 tickets for 2 days (2nd day until 4:30pm). If you need good deal on rentals there is a shop close by....it's more expensive at the mountain.
This is what skiing or boarding should be FUN! Holiday Valley is a sweet spot to get away for a good weekend of riding. The layout of the mountain and the lifts make it seem like it is never crowded and lines flow. Enough diverse terrain to keep everyone happy. I went to school in the area and skied it years ago and now find myself still going back for a great weekend of boarding. The town is great - shopping and places to eat are tops. And if you want, work in a roadtrip to Niagara Falls which is not too far away!

Great time! What a good little resort. There was not much vert but a good variety of terrain for the area. And I've got to agree with a few of the comments below in saying the town is fantastic. One of the best little ski towns I've been to.
Holiday Valley is a nice place to go if you live in Ohio and dont want to drive to far. Its about 3.5 hours from Akron, probably around the same time from Cleveland. Theres not much vertical, but there are plenty of blacks to keep even the best skier busy.
