Afton is finally gett'n it. They must have sent the groomers to grooming school. It's better than its been in a long time. They do still have a few chicken heads where the bulleys don't go. Terrain parks of which there are 4 and sometimes 5 are done well with something for everyone but they get pretty beat up on the weekends. it would be nice if they did a fix up mid day. Mid week we had to wait while they groomed them. It would be nice if they did them at night so they could set up and be ready to go first thing in the morning, maybe they'll get that. My wife and son enjoyed the traveling hay wagon/schuttle when they took the wrong turn and ended up in another state. For our family it's still the best deal for the money. Just bring your own food, do a picnic and skip the bars, they still don't get that.

Rode Afton this last week Lots of improvements on the hills as well as around the chalet. The groomers must have went to grooming school cause it has never been maintained like this in the 8 years I've been there. Their parks could use a little touch up midway through the day, they get pretty used, but my kids had a good time in them. Nice thing is they have parks with something for everyone, so beginners can get a lot of practice. It would be nice if they had a rope tow, the chair is a drag.
Only bad part was food service slow slow slow and barely warm but that's like all of the areas in the midwest.

whoever the H#$% (ha) thinks afton is the best thinkg they has ever seen needs to get out of MN. Or even to northern MN! Afton is one of the best that is close to the twin cities, but it is a bump compared to other resorts. If you get done with your run in under a minute, it is time to experience something new! Take a ski trip that takes you to the reasons for skiing, not packed trails with 500 runs, 536 chairs, and 74 ft. vert! All right sorry, Afton is my home hill. But I still call it a hill. If you can make a trip to the mounains and you will love skiing (or boarding) for the rest of your life!

I have skiied Afton a hand full of times. It is certainly convenient to the Twin Cities. Also for those coming from the South, Afton offers more than Whelch Village, which is a smaller ski area to the south. Certainly a pretty large sized ski area (240+ acreas). Along with variety Afton offers a huge lift capastiy 20,000 riders per hour. This is definatley good cause it can get busy quickly...too quickly. With business comes chewed up snow and ice. Afton also seems a little flat in areas simply because the runs are too long for the vertical. The vertical is actually closer to 200' then 350' according to my research. This aside Afton offers great variety, large area ( by midwest standards). Definately makes top 20 in the Midwest I think it's an excellent Midwest ski area, but traveling to Giants Ridge, Lutsen, or maybe Spirit would provide a better experience. Afton is highly recomended during the week when theres less people and rates are cheaper.

First time at Afton was last weekend. We are new to the area. When we got there it was really crowded, but we never had to wait and the snow was great. They had people everywhere directing traffic in the lots and on the hill. In fact they had a guy on a ATV that actually helped us to find a parking spot. It was really well managed. They had people helping people with their gear as well as opening doors and being on the hill information centers. Rental was a little slow but the people were polite. Our helpers were from south america, working here for the winter which was interesting. We didn't realize how big it really is, guess that's why it didn't feel crowed on the hills. The chalet we went to on the top of the hill was a little crowed but the burger they served was worth the wait. For our first winter outing in Minnesota we were really impressed with the service, however I think we'll go back again during the week when it's not as busy. It's a good value for the dollar

I went skiing at Afton Alps for the first time today (Wednesday).
Actually, it was for a field trip at our school. We took a skiing class. As a snowboarder, I have experience with snow, but skiing was EASY compared to snowboarding. The Bowl run was great! We couldn't go on Black Diamond, but we stayed on the Blue square runs.
The small, green circle bunny hills are great for racing.

I skied Afton Alps for the first time ever over the weekend. The weather was down right chilly, but the conditions were great...over 4" of fresh snow on top of a few other inches from days prior. So bearing the cold, I made some great turns.

Afton is a fun little place stuck in the middle of no where. I think probably during a weekend that isn't so dang cold, it'd be busy with people from the Metro, but today it was OK. Their vertical is very small, but the runs are fun. There's only a three runs right on the front side facing the main chalet that are worthwhile--that is, steep enough. The Bowl run is tons of fun because of all the natural terrain features in it. Combined with the great snow cover Afton had, it made for a great time.

The ticketing process is a little screwy: having to buy a ticket to be able to park in the lot? That's kind of nutty time.

The lifts are old but in good shape and move at a decent click. The lifties are courteous, so there's no problem with surface transportation at Afton either.

Overall, a good little resort. I'm not sure how much the ticket price is, but as long as it isn't astronomical, it's worth showing up for.

over the years I havn't seen much improvement with afton. I go there often and being a snowboarder I expect at least a halfway decent terrain park. But, each year it is the same, small jumps with ice landings and just an overall lack of attention and care to the park.
