"I drive the groomer at Chestnut Mountain and I all I can say to all of you people who say that we do not grom is that you obviously have no idea what you are talking about. We grom our slopes every night unless the weather does not allow for it. We can only groom the slopes when the temperatures fall below freezing"

First off, Cudo's for your terrain park awards in Sam. Job well done.
With 25 years in the biz, you are flat out wrong. You should be grooming for your begginers in ALMOST any condition except, a major rain event. If there is enough snow to open, something should be attended to with your cat.
A ski area should provide a groomed surface if only on begginer terrain, main stay runs and always in the terrain park.

Keeping the blade up(only push where its a must) and going fast is much better then the ruts or piles left behind from the day before. Instructors who have the begginers will be thankful as well as your Risk Manager.

Also your statment to your clients or future guests is a little Rude here. So....Learn to operate instead of "drive" Or Go back to snowmaking :)

Chestnut is a great place to learn and have fun !

& yes, I have been to the area.

I drive the groomer at Chestnut Mountain and I all I can say to all of you people who say that we do not grom is that you obviously have no idea what you are talking about. We grom our slopes every night unless the weather does not allow for it. We can only groom the slopes when the temperatures fall below freezing so you were probally just there during pre or post season when it was to warm to groom.

The staff is extremely enthusiastic and willing to help. There is also a wide variety of terrain including the best learners hill in the area, many intermediate hills, and some of the steepest terrain around. There are moguls, NASTAR race courses on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, and an amazing terrain park. There are six lifts, two rope tows, and a magic carpet for the little ones. Lift lines are always short, less than one minute if there even is one, other than on holidays.

The Farside, Chestnut Mountain Resort's terrain park, is the largest of its kind in the Midwest. A triple chairlift that is just for the park takes you to seven acres of quarter pipes, half pipes, jumps and more than 20 types of rails.

The afterlife is great as well there is a game room, pool and hot tub, resturant and bar above the cafeteria, two gift shops, and over 120 hotel rooms.

Chestnut Mountain is a great place to ski and snowboard for anyone from first timers to beginers. Racers and freestylers alike will enjoy the varying terrain. Staff is friendly and eager to help. The terrain park is the best around and the after life is great.

Chestnut Mountain is one of the best ski resorts I have ever been to. The bunny hill is really great. You get the hang of it after a few runs. Then, you should definitly head to Rookies Ridge. It's one of the best begininner hills in the area. It's not too long or too short, and it has a lift instead of tow rope. Old Main is another great begginer hill, it's a very long hill but easy for the beginer skiier.

Lets be realistic here. The one thing to consider before visiting any midwest ski location is just that. It is the midwest, and with that being said, we don't have mountains here we have hills. We don't have the luxury to rip lines on 3000' of vertical fresh. Chestnut is a great midwest hill to satisfy that urge to get out on the snow. Yes you'll ride a lift for 3 minutes to ski 45 seconds. Find me a midwest ski area where this isn't the case and i'd be surprised. Getting down to it: Chestnut is a great place to learn and hone basic skills. Even the most advanced skier can work edging on one ski all the way down a black here and be challenged. They open early and make snow often. December dollar days is a must attend!

OK...I'm originally from the West and was a Ski Patroler for over 15 years. Chestnut Mtn is a great place to learn and does have enough pitch to challenge any type of skier.

We have been skiing there for over five (5) years and have they have taught all of our kids to ski. We still travel out West for family ski vacations and the kids will keep up with us on any terrain.

I also think that the concessions are very reasonable in contrast to others resorts. Having a second home in the Galena Territories makes it very easy for us to come up for a day or two. The annual pre-season pass at $300.00 is a deal!

This is for the first year skiier and boarder out there. Nervous about the accumulative speed? Scared to death of a face-plant down the hill?
Thinking "How in the world does someone get on and off that chairlift?" Go to Chestnut Mountain. Their beginner hill, 'Rookie's Ridge' is the best around, the slope is gentle, but sloped enough so that you can move. Lose control, sit down! Most bunny hills are driven by rope-tows or magic carpets (what a great, no arm-torturing thing that is!). So, once up and down a few times, beginners are encouraged to go to the next step of green run with a chairlift. Sometimes, too fast a move at other resorts. Chestnut's 'Rookie's Ridge' is the solution. And, don't be afraid of the chairlift. It's seat is low, goes slow and the helpful attendants are very conscious of beginners. You'll not regret the ride. Do not confuse 'Old Main' with the bunny hill. It is a great, much longer, beginner run, but only after you're bored with the chairlift at 'Rookie's' and have some control. Ask ski patrol for directions if you're not sure. Beginners, take a lesson. The instuctors are great and will save you from a lot of sitting, or injury. You'll enjoy the snow much more. Welcome to the sport. It's an addicting world of it's own. Relax and remember you can only fall from your butt to the snow. Just stay in control. Go to Chestnut, meet snow and have some real fun.

For the more advanced, Chestnut's a great midwest snow hill. The downhill is fun for where we're at. Tune here before the bigger slopes or when you can only take a day or weekend trip. Sometimes crowded because of the awesome beginner areas and terrain park. They keep lift lines moving and more importantly, people are not allowed to line up across a run and just 'sit' tripping-up everyone coming around the turn. Best job that I've seen! (And I start snow hunting everywhere in the Midwest from Thanksgiving to April! Been to most of the resorts for comparison). SKI PATROL, GREAT WORK! See you out there. Snowmaking's great here, but natural's the best. Everyone wish for SNOW!

If anyone comes here expecting to hit a jump and come crashing into 4 feet of pow on the landing you are greatly mistaken. So bear that in mind when you think of Chestnut Mountain. You are talking about your average Midwest Bunny Hill.

In relation to other mountains in the area, I find that this mountain does provide a decent amount of terrain to cover. The groomed runs are nice. However, with all the ropes, it kills the whole freeriding aspect when you want to cut through trees, moreso than other resorts in the area. The runs are farely long relatively. Still you can push your way down in about 25-30 seconds with the right attitude and gear.

In terms of quality of snow, it's decent. It gets slightly icy at night but not many mountains in the Midwest can avoid that unless you go up to Minnesota. It's definately not as bad as a place like Mount Snow.

The lines are a little long, but not too terrible. Anyone who claims about long lines for any resort in the region needs to go to a main lift at Tremblant on the busiest days of the year (Breckenridge can get quite bad also).

Overall, I'd say it's a great place if you're in the area. I wouldn't recommend coming here for the skiing if you're from out East or West but I know plenty of people who moved to the area who think it's some of the best riding around. And being close to Chicago is a plus. Definately a place worthwhile to go to if you can't get to any of the major West destinations.

I am a ski/snowboard instructor at Chestnut, and let me first start off by saying that this is not the west, nor do we try to be the west. About 95% of our base is artificial snow, and even though we don't get much pow, they still manage to make riding pretty good. I grew up riding this resort, and being out west several times I'd have to say that if you want insanely good snow, or intense terrain, chestnut may not be the place for you, but for people within driving distance, or beginners that may want to try skiing or snowboarding for the first time, or even someone that used to ski all the time and would just like to relive what they used to do, chestnut is great. 3 black diamonds, and they are decent, they have moguls and features. chestnut really goes out of their way to improve their park and pipe though, and we are proud to say that not many resorts in the area have as many features as chestnut. we are open for night skiing every night, midnight on fridays, and friday night rail jams might appeal to freestyle riders. Not much else to say except I love chestnut, many people love chestnut, its a great place to vacations, great for the family, fun for those wishing to get into snowsports.
