Easiest black runs ive ridden in SoCal. Good mountain if your just starting out. Avoid the weekends, and ull have fun. Overall good mountain, for being soo close to LA. Only those winding roads are a real pain.
I've been to snow summit about 12 times. Its a good ski resort to go to if you are still learning, and mainly ride on green or the easiest blue runs. If you mainly ride blue or black runs, you will find the mountain boring and unchallenging. Weekends can be very crowded, but if you stick to the upper lifts or side lifts that don't feed into the base area, you won't experience too much of a wait. Most weekend visitors are in various stages of learning how to ski/snowboard, so that means people with lack of control, people resting right smack in the middle of the runs, lots of teenagers, etc. Once visitors get good enough, they never return to snow summit and go to Mammoth or out-of-state resorts instead. Nice town, with lots of restaurants, bars and shopping. Beautiful surrounding pine covered hills and beautiful Big Bear Lake offer a nice scenic backdrop when you're skiing. Plenty of lodging to choose from, from Motel 6 to 4-star lodging. Bottom line: go if you are beginner-intermediate, don't go if you are a full-fledged intermediate or above.
Went to SNOW SUMMIT on Feb. 25 '08 (Monday). They say the place is empty on weekdays, but there was a significant amount of people there this time for some reason- Mostly people just learning how to ski/board...so there was a lot of people dodging going on for some of the slopes. It was kind of icy, but you can't really blame that on the resort. For the drive (I have 2 hours away) and the price, it was ok and I would probably go back just for the heck of it someday.
Lift lines were great, we never waited more than five minutes in line.
Worst part of this resort is the fact that most of the staff we encountered or even just observed was really unnecessarily rude and grouchy. I saw the staff yell at some guy for the most trivial thing, when he could have just said it politely. And any time someone didn't get out of the way immediately at the top of the lift, the operator would stick his face out the window, sneer, growl and yell at the people. I mean, sure it's annoying when people block the drop-off but come on, do these guys really hate their jobs so much that they have to blow a gasket every time some newbie makes a simple mistake?
Boarders were pretty unfriendly, from what I saw. I was riding the lift and I saw a 12 yr old girl skiing down below. She fell, and two teenagers kicked snow all over her as they rode past. They rode off laughing and cussing. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
Overall good place to go if you've GOT to go snowboarding and you live nearby, but the winding road combined with So. Californias rude/bad/spaced out drivers (such a shame that I live here) makes me feel like it's too much of a hassle to get to such a mediocre skiing/snowboarding experience.
Keep you kids away from here, but if you're a grown up and can put up with a bunch of punks, go for it.

I like Snow Summit. They blow snow whenever possible to build up a nice base. It is only the second week of winter and they are 90 % open. People who complain about the conditions are clueless. Have you ever heard about the weather channel? Hmmm. I do my home work and only go when it is going to snow. It's pretty easy folks! If you go when there is no fresh snow, then it's your fault and you have no reason to complain. With all of the data at your finger tips on TV and the internet, not catching good conditions is silly. Oh yeah, I do work full time and live in Carlsbad. If you want better conditions, move to Utah!
Compared to the rest of the resorts in Southern California, it is the best, but that is not saying much. (Mammoth is NOT in Southern California; it's a 5 hour drive from L.A. and only 2 hours from Tahoe.) Snow Summit and all of the other Southern California resorts are 1/3 of the size of a normal mountain. It's about the size of Peak 9 at Breckenridge and less challenging. There are only 2 runs that equate to anying more than an intermediate run and half of their challenge is the fact that they're ice sheets most of the time. If it wasn't the best resort within driving distance for a day-trip from Southern California, I would never go. Like some other posters have said, I only go as a warm-up day to get my ski legs back before my first big trip of the season.
Tip 1: Avoid the weekends! Standing in a liftline for 45 minutes for a 4 minute cruizer run is not worth it.
Tip 2: Atleast 2/3 of people there are snowboarders, and most of them stick to Summit Run and the Westridge terrain park. Unless you are a beginner (Summit Run) or terrain park ripper (Westridge), avoid these areas.

Its a fun park. They give you a dual pass so you can ride Bear mountain too. Thats a good way of not getting bored. The runs dont last long enough its a quick 1:20 back to the East express chair if you like to haul. The terrain could be more challenging. Try to go before spring when it gets really wet. Really mellow staff works the mountain.

Snow Summit has the most reliable chairlifts in all of southern ca. The Lift Maintenance Crew is obviously highly skilled. I wonder who the supervisor is? He is doing a great job and should be paid a lot more!

Summit is ok for a midweek day trip but not on the weekends. They do a good job with snowmaking. Natural snow is always a lucky plus for sol ca. Mountain services could be better and bring your lunch or last weeks pay check. Prices for bad food are extreme. Overall employees are polite. Not a bad place for early season or pre ski trip practice. Not a place for more than a day at a time.
Snow summit is awesome midweek. You have the whole mountain to yourself. The weekends are a zoo. Summit is the place to practice your skills before attempting Big Bear. Just do everyone a favor hit it or move it and if you not injured get out of the way.
