I do not work or live in Steamboat. My wife and I travel to Steamboat from Virginia each year for early season (second or third week in December). We love this resort!!! Early season provides lower lodging costs for the week and we arrive on Sunday and start our skiing on Monday. For the first five days no lift lines at all and the last day Saturday it can get busy. One of the top resorts that get early snow with 75% of the mountain open prior to our arrival. Only resort that gets more snow is Wolf Creek CO which has no lodging at the base and have to drive 20 miles from the town to the resort. Staff is outstanding and great places to eat on the mountain or downtown. Some have mentioned that the staff is rude and not helpful. With any big resorts there is going to be staff member that may seem less than helpful, but that should not be the reason to let it ruin your vacation or stop coming to Steamboat. Get place to bring your kids and ski runs for everyone.

Powder Tip: Come down "Tomahawk" which is a blue run and short way down the trail take a left thru the tree's to "Sundail". Make sure you're okay with skiing the deep powder and your bindings are set properly. If you drop a ski you'll be looking for a while (just ask me and thanks to the ski patrol "Chris" for skiing down and giving me a hand).

Ski the boat!!!! I'll be there (12/14 - 12/21/2008).

Thanks,
John

Pretty valley. Very crowded. Rude locals. Decent snow. Windy and cold. Too expensive.

::Summary Not Review::
This place is great there are so many runs so many for each level of skier/boarder. But prepare if you are a level Green skier and you have to get down from the top of the mountain,your better off taking Vagabond although it goes straight down the mountain as long as you ease your way down it's batter then, Why Not when people say it 3 miles long THEY MEAN it. In the summer they use it as a road for trucks to get up the mountain so thats all it is a winding road all the way down the mountain.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
::The Good::
There are so many runs for each level, This place is great for kids if you enroll your child into the ski camp. They will place them into one of six groups and at the end of the day there teacher will give you a report on there improvement and they will decide if he or she moves up to the next level or stay at the same one. And my younger brother who is six started at level two, he could barely make it all the way down the bunny slope without falling. By the end of are trip he was coming down blue with no problem at all. SteamBoat ranges from extremely easy greens to the mogul covered black diamond's if you want a Chalenge you should try Twister it is COVERED in mountain sized moguls.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
::The Bad::
Ok heres the bad, There's not alot of it but there is some. First of all once you get to the top of the mountain and you do a couple runs here and there there probally a one in million chance of being lined up with a run that goes all the way down. You would have to take one lift up to take a run 2/3's of the way down but then that runs ends. So then you will have to take another lift back up so then your 1/3's of the way down then you take a long run all the way down so forget about taking one run all the way down its more of a Zig-Zag down.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
::Food::
Ok alot of people say the Ski Apes is'nt good. Well there half right you just have to know who to ask to give you a good place to eat, many places have good food but not all have great service. But as always the more you pay the more you get so your better off going to a higher class restraunt for higher class service.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
::Rentals::
There are so many places to rent your gear from but I would recomend Terry sports. You can rent your stuff at a great price and if you dont think your boots or Ski's/Boards are'nt fitting you can take it back and they will fit them to you for free.
************IF YOU WANT GOOD LESSONS FOR YOUR KIDS ADULT'S ASK***********
You should ask for Red Brooks yes thats his real name he works at Terry sports and he will teach you or your kids the basic's and the not so well known moves for snowboarding.

Keep in mind this review is from a 13year olds perspective and if I might say so that was a Hell of a review.

For the third time in six years I took my family of five to Steamboat for a Christmas ski vacation, December 22ed through the 28th. Friendly people,family oriented, and awesome snow is what keeps us coming back. Snow boarders, skiers, and telemark skiing are all welcome and we never had any issues. We had over thirty five inches while there with two days of Champaign Powder. My kids range from 17 to 9 and they would love nothing more than go every year.

We have our circuit of restuarants but some of the best were The Butcher Shop,Double Z, Jade Summit, and Cantina. We have stayed at the Ranch the past two visits and short of an IPod charger disappearing, it was great.

first the good - the snow was excellent, the people were very nice, the shuttle service was the best i've used and it was not crowded.
now the bad - the town is spread out so much that you never get the mountain village "feel" that i love so much about skiing. I have a bad habit of comparing other resorts to Snowmass and Aspen. Steamboat is not in the same category. Snowmass has many more runs. You can ski new runs for days. I felt that I was going over the same runs every day at Steamboat.
I would rate Steamboat behind Aspen, Buttermilk and Snowmass area, but ahead of Breckingridge, Keystone, Copper mountain and Winter Park.

I had an awesome time while in steamboat.Arrived mar 2 there was fresh powder everyday.The weather forecast for the town does not due the mountain justice,they would call for an inch or two and there would be 6 to 10 above the gondola.The last day we were there mar 7 I was able to find four to five feet of "champagne" in the trees.The groomed runs held a modest 12 to 18 inches.I have been other resorts with more apres but when you put 6 or 7 hours of that the hot springs sound pretty good.If you want to go to a place where professional skiers abound this is the place to go, they both work at the mountain and play there.You can also ride the lift with and ski among olympic athlets.It also looked like they had a very good childrens program.The prices for food and lift tickets well you get what you pay for and I felt like I got my moneys worth.I only used the park for a little while but if thats your thing you will be very happy its huge.

Hey Steamboat parties of interest! I couldn't wait to visit the
“ski town USA”,
with that title I expected a super ski town and full all around ski experience, to include great terrain and resort.
Having grown up in small northern Idaho town and skiing at my local resort, that was never heard of outside Idaho or Montana I figured these other resorts must be much better. ........ NOT
Steamboat is rich in skiing history and is an excellent family mountain for intermediate cruising fun, with its many wide long runs that can easily be converted over for great racing.
The town is not ski town like at all and the mountain is okay at best, the steeps in bounds are super short lived and the famed tree skiing not even close to my local resort.
The lifts that access the upper intermediate terrain close at 3:15, what's up with that ......... it’s not even a place where people can get stuck in some back canyons.

My suggestion to an advance skier is do not waste your money, go else where, to a family it's a good especially mid week, but there still many better places for that as well.
The town and local area are most likely best in the summer months.

Signed: Montana / Wyoming skier!!

My family and I arrived at the Sheraton Base Camp (Hotel) on Saturday Dec. 30th, 2007 for another week of madness and mayhem on the slopes.
Whiteout conditions and 12" of snow on Sunday caused us to slow down a bit, but nothing more. My son (8 years old)joined the Rough Riders for the week and ended up taking the Bronze medal for his age group in the NASTAR contest on that Friday afternoon. My Daughter (18 years old) also did classes all week and still fell face first into the oncoming hills. My wife still skis on the green circle slopes and I moved on to the upper mountain. On this last trip, we took the opportunity to buy a timeshare in town. What else can you say. I love this place.

Myself and 5 others visited Steamboat 6 days, and had nothing but a great experience. Skiing was great, midweek is best, weekends got busy. Town was nice, but you have to ask around for a good place to eat. We encountered nothing but friendly people. Quality of the snow was A+... 3rd time to Steamboat and will return!!!
