I got a Monarch pass this year that gave me three days each at seven different resorts. Here it is, the end of March, and I've now hit all of them. The amazing part of the pass is that most of the places where you get the free days seemingly blow Monarch out of the water when you compare the acreage, vertical drop, number of trails, and number/speed of lifts. However, each time I went somewhere else, I would return to Monarch the following weekend thinking that I would be in for a comparitavely tame experience, and each time I was proven wrong by two things: First of all, the snow quality ALWAYS surpased any other resort's snow, and that feeling is hard to beat. Second, although the lifts are old and relatively slow, they are short enough that I've calculated that you can get from the top of any Monarch lift and back in fifteen minutes. That means you can get around 25 runs in a day if you keep at it. If you like to travel and you love good snow, then a Monarch season pass is the way to go!

Pros: Great snow, reasonable price, beautiful scenery. Good for kids and families.
Cons: Lines and slow chairs for typically short runs. Stay away on vacation and spring break weeks if you don't have the patience.

The lodge used to be a lot more group and family friendly. For example sack lunches are relegated to a tent and may not be eaten in the lodge itself. Coolers will be confiscated in the lodge.
Servers in the bar seem to be a lot less 'on the ball.'
Skied it for the first time over X-mas and loved it. Have been to Crested Butte 3 times and always wanted to see what it was like so I stopped on the way in to Gunnison and I'm glad I did. They had better powder than CB but obviously not as large a place and not a whole lot of amenities. It wasn't really busy but still tended to get pretty packed in the main run-outs to the bottom. Some locals in Gunnison said it gets really packed on the weekends and the lot overflows into the highway. It was nothing like that the Wed. I was there so if it got to that point the lines and green/blue runs would probably be too crowded but there are plenty of black/double black areas to stay away from the crowds as long as that is something you like and can do. You'd probably want to stay in Salida which is just a short drive back down the pass. Gunnison is your other option but it's about a 45 min. drive. The advantage to staying in Gunnison though is you're only 25 min. from Crested Butte so you can do both, as I did, and not spend much on lodging compared to staying in CB, paying a lot, and being a long way from Monarch.

Because I live in Colorado and fairly easy driving distance to most of the "Famous" resorts, I can ski where I please. Until today 2-1-08 Wolfcreek had the best powder of any, year in and year out. Today at Monarch the powder was waste deep if you strayed away from the middle of almost all of the runs. Im talking the light powder that was like nothing I have ever seen. If you can take a ski day this weekend, go to Monarch. Great people and maybe the best snow in the state right now.
Don't miss out, it wont last.
Monarch Mountain is an absolute GEM!! I lived in Aspen for almost 5 years and had a 4 mountain pass with some stellar POW days to be sure but I just "discovered" Monarch and the snow is some of the best POW I have ever ridden! Although not the most convenient of mountains, it is well worth the 3 hour drive from Co Springs or Denver even with weather. My most recent POW day there was spent making fresh tracks ALL day in 15" to 18". A true spritual experience as there are no crowds and there is powder to be found all season long.
As you'll also discover, the entire staff from top to bottom is extremely friendly and helpful. This mountain is Pure Sport with no frills. If your looking for shopping and ski posers that just want to look stylish on the slopes, this aint your place but if you are a true rider and want the best skiing around, come check out Monarch. It's truly refreshing in the era of the megaresorts for the megarich that don't even think about the average joe. Monarch has the best value in Colorado hands down. Discount tickets for the '07/'08 season are less than half the price of your Vail or Aspen with none of the hassle. It reminds me of Aspen Highlands back in the early 90's before Skico bought and ruined it when you parked at the bottom and walked a couple minutes to the lifts. Now you can't even see the bottom through all the multi million dollar condos.
I'd love to see Monarch grow a bit and put in a high speed quad to the top of Mirkwood Bowl but then again, maybe not as only the most adventurous make the effort which is the way it should be. I definately don't want Monarch to get bought by one of these developers and ruin the pure ski experience.
The only drawback is the drive. My recomendation from Co Springs is to go Hwy24 to Hwy285 and not go 115 to Hwy50. Not nearly as treachereous and traffic does not back up nearly as much. Hwy50 gets pretty gnarly in the best of conditions through the canyons. Getting down from Monarch Pass can get pretty dicey during weather but take a 4x4. I've seen 2wheel drive vehicles have a very bad time getting up and back down. I wouldn't even consider anything but a 4x4 for the trip.
Do your self a favor, make the trip up and experience skiing as it was 20 years ago the way it was meant to be. You will never look at the sport the same way again.

Bottom line, the best snow at the best price. It's all natural conditions can't be beat. Mirkwood Basin offers up the extreme terrain and great tree shots to those willing to make the walk. Slow chairs give the chance to breathe and take in the amazing scenery. Small size is a convenience rather than a drawback in this day and age of resort hassles. The staff is happy and takes the time to make it all easy and fun. Apres at the Sidewinder, but keep in mind the drive down to town, Monarch Pass is not for the lighthearted after dark. Salida and BV offer solid accommodation and dining options, while the hot springs in both areas give a chance to soak and soothe.
I have a high altitude training center in almont Colorado 45 minutes west and have been skiing Monarch for 25 years. You might wonder with Crested Butte only 15 miles north of me.
Its simple really...customer service and GREAT POWDER. When the season opened some years ago I was on the furthest east run and ran into a herd of Elk...Oh Yeah and to see the continental divide from an Eagles point of view tops the moment.. You can see Venus during the day and feel the earth turn. Almost always no lines and I know everybody by name and how about knowing me by name. It has it all. During a blizzard and chest deep snow off the cliffs is parachuting. You keep looking for the dream snow well dude here it is!

It's relatively cheaper than most the other resorts. They have black runs but they are pretty short but challenging. Some off piste skiing though. It's a hell of a climb to thier double D's but it's worth it. I hope one day they install a lift up there. It's a treacherous drive up to Monarch if your coming from the east on hwy 50 when its snowing, a lot of switchbacks and the semi traffic can really slow you down. Monarch has fantastic views, great snow and close in parking.

My wife and I ski Monarch every year and love it! The snow has always been great with plenty of POWDER and no lines! The staff at Monarch is very friendly. We found a great place to stay at the Poncha Lodge. There are many great restaurants and frienly bars in the town of Salida.
