there seems to be ongoing problem with the main lift this season, only running at 66% capacity the past few days. and they just announced that the main (summit) chair will be down for three days next week. go figure

the food is good but prices have gone up considerably this year. lineups are big everywhere during the holidays and on powder days. 20+ minutes waiting time at the summit chair is not uncommon. snow is usually excellent if you can handle the crowd.

This resort really is a hidden gem. Powder magazine once reported that "if you put everything that really mattered into one little resort you would have Whitewater". They were right. It is skiing like it use to be, all about the snow and the friendly atmoshphere. No one will give you a second look if you have duct tape on your jacket. I have had several days there that have been better than some days heliskiing. If you like steep & deep, light dry powder, there is nowhere better. There is also awesome access to backcountry for those who want it. The terrain park may not impress hardcore park rats, but the whole mountain is a terrain park and when the snow is waste deep who cares about the park.
The food is unlike any other resort I have experienced, so good they have published a cook book of their recipes. Nelson has an abundance of of restaurants and bars, and lots of cool people for a great apres scene.
OK, I will admit I may be biased because I live in the Kootenays, but I live here because I can't move anywhere where the skiing would be any better.
Just returned from seven days in Nelson.. Great low key town where jeans and a hoodie might be overdressing! Spent two days at Whitewater. Conditions were great and the relatively easy hike to Ymir Peak allows for some epic drops and untouched snow. Tree riding is abundant for the lack of verticle the mountain offers but with the limited number of people, your guaranteed to find untouched goods all over the mountain. Food is Great and cheap (very uncommon for resorts)... A real treat from most busy overpriced resorts
Whitewater has a very relaxed vibe and some excellent skiing, with a pretty good terrain mix for all abilities. Lots of great tree skiing and ample touring terrain just outside the ropes, alot of which spits you out on the access road for an easy thumb back to the base. Chairs are old and slow but who cares, the snow is deep, your legs will enjoy the break and you'll likely have some spirited conversation with whoever you ride up with.
Short on vert and acreage but big on snow.
Hiking gets you to some great spots.
Daylodge food is excellent.
People are friendly.
Nelson = cool town.
Lots of tele skiers.
Worth getting to.
