Every time I've been to Red there has been beautiful fresh snow!!!!! A lot of the runs are really really nice, but I have not explored as much as I would like. The town itself is also very cute. There are some good places to eat different types of food, from Chinese and Italian to some great chicken wings and burgers, and now some Mexican too!!! There is also a REALLY REALLY amazing restaurant right at the base, Gypsy at Red. The food was so good!
The people are very friendly, and the tissues come in very handy at all the lifts!
I also really like the new Silverlode chair! There are some really good runs for some nice carving, and the best part is it keeps the beginners off of the top of the hill so I can enjoy the nice intermediate runs like Southern Comfort!
I like that you can ski without worrying about people bumping into you, and you can go skiing with people who love trees, and just stick to the runs nearby and not go separately!!

I was there for the 3rd time for 2 weeks in the first half of January, and oh my god, what an incredible experience. Sure, there were problems with the lifts, but that's life in the ski biz. The owners seem like they care, because I heard that they are completely overhauling the electricity system there, which caused problems with the lifts in the first place.
rafters is an awesome little pub. the lodge might be a bit worn down, but the owner has only been there for like 4 years now, and it takes time to get together the cash to rebuild everything, but i heard it was coming along with new chairs and everything. that's what the condos are for, people!
for those of you who don't like red (see below), maybe you should put on your bogner fartbag and take your screaming kids and trophy wife off to vail. red is for people who like it real.
What a fantastic mountain. Dumped over 50 cm on us in 3 days! Combined with the 52 cm the week before, this was powder bliss. The lifts were slow, but the time was needed to recover for the next thrilling powder ride to the bottom! My 9 year old was shredding the BC the powder was so deep we got burried in it just by sitting down. Coolers on the back side was the deepest pow I've ever seen. I rode through patches that were waist deep!
The trees are phenom! We spent every open minute in the powder filled trees!!! the only bummer was the closing at 3:30 for the main mountain, and 5 pm for RED. However we had more than enough fun thrashing the deep pow on red for the time allotted!
This has by far and away spoiled us on powder days! I can't even close my eyes right now, all I see are deep billowing powder-filled steeps!

lifts are terrible, base lodge needed to be gutted twenty years ago. no parking and no ambience. The new lift is a joke. The time it takes to get to the goods has doubled in ten years.
If you ski when it snows the mountain rules. If you show up when the lifts break you have a big problem. The owners seem to only think about selling condos.
The locals are the best and the mountain is awesome but when the owner guts the mountain nothing will be left. The owner has cut down a great majority of the trees to sell for cash. What use to be the best in tree skiing is becoming a wide open mountain that any one can slide down.
We can only hope that the owner BK's in real estate and a person(s) who loves the mountain and town takes over.

"Rustic" is a very generous term to describe the pathetic facilities. Actually, the lifts are very old and slow and tend to break down a lot. They got a new quad chair, but it's just as slow and only goes part way up the mountain, then it's over to the extra-slow old lift to the top. The peak elevation of this hill is not that high, so more and more often it gets hit with rain (lousy when you've planned your trip in advance). They don't do very much brushing, if at all some years, so many of the runs are quite sketchy well into the winter. Half of their parking lot has been converted to condos in the last two years, so good luck finding parking. As for customer service, it is entirely unheard of at this place. They shut down half the hill due to wind the other day and operated the other lift at half speed (consequently huge lineups). Those of us stupid enough to pay for a day lift ticket asked for a refund after getting two whole runs in, but were told forget it - the hill's still open.
The food in the lodges is over-priced and of low quality. The town of Rossland used to be better, but many of the good restaurants that used to be there have close lately. As for shopping, you can hit all of the stores in about an hour or less. Nelson is a much better town to stay in.
If you live in Rossland, sorry you're stuck with Red as it is. Everyone else, the nearest alternatives (Fernie, Whitewater, Revelstoke, Big White, Schweitzer) are all much better.
Skiied last year during awesome snowfall- fantastic powder, and first tracks all day long.
Only problem was it became difficult for intermediates for a few days, until the snow stopped.
Great hill for experts and off piste, ok for intermediates and beginners.
Really friendly and good skischool.
Facilities not as in the luxury resorts, but much less expensive.
Great value for money for powder hounds
You win some, you lose some...in our case, we hit Red a few weeks after any significant snowfall. The mountain was pretty skiied out and in some steeper areas, a bit scary with plenty of rock and roots. Red is an awesome mountain for experts, OK for intermediates and beginners. The smaller peak, Red, is pretty steep with fat cruisers and steep bumps. Unfortunately, it sat in a murky cold cloud layer for most of the weekend.
Granite, the 2nd larger mountain, is mainly steep gladed runs. The groomed cruisers are around the back on the Paradise Chair. There are some great runs back here - Southern Comfort, Ruby Tuesday - offering fast cruising, but you go to Red for POWDER and steep tree skiing. With few actual cut runs, most of Granite is comprised of areas of steeps, trees and glades. We did a few runs in the Powder Fields area, but with such variable snow it was tough skiing. One of the interesting things about Red is it can be hard to find a line or run again. With skiing virtually 360 degrees off the summit, we found some OK stashes of softer snow in shadier areas, but then couldn't find our way back (signage on the mountain is pretty bad).
Next year there are plans for a new lift out of the base, replacing the Silverlode chair, that will run slightly higher and access new green and blue runs on the lower mountain. These runs are already cut and offer fun meandering cruising, but unfortunately this was all in the lower valley fog so we skiied up high in the sun on Paradise.
We found was some OK snow on the steep & treed north-facing slopes of Mt Roberts, one of many easily-accessed touring areas just outside the resort boundary.
Summary: great steeps, lots of terrain, easy and excellent backcountry touring, great apres-ski bar. Most of the money seems to be going into the real estate. Base lodge and lifts are prettty tired. The backside Paradise lodge isn't too bad. And i guess in most years Red is known for epic powder. Unfortunately we didn't get any.

Red is an expert's paradise. Red probably has the best tree skiing on the planet, and that's the reason to go there. Areas like the Powder Fields, Roots, and Robert's will blow your mind. Pow lasts a long time here too. The lodges and food are pretty bad, and the town lacks ammenities, but the hill rules. Go in late January or February for the best conditions.
