The hill had great powder and narrow chutes, even having large cornices and 20-footers. Impressive terrain. However, the layout was awful. A: The lifts were slow. B: Must hike to get to the Terminator Ridge and White Wall. C: You can't take a lift from the mid-mountain back to the summit; you must ski to the base. D: Below mid-mountain all the terrain was slushy and not challenging. Lake Louise has the same snow conditions and terrain without wasting time on the lifts and the ski-out.

Kicking Horse is a superb skiing mountain. One of the best I've ever seen. But it is not a destination resort.

Craggy, steep, and intimidating, the Horse is really most suited to expert skiers. The terrain is "super gnarly" to paraphrase one of the locals I was skiing with, ranging from wide open bowls to numerous chutes (I think they claim to have 70 IN BOUNDS) to really good tree runs. It is not very well suited for beginners; they'd have to spend time on the Catamount chair and would never see the spectacular views from the top. The green run (singular) from the top is no joke. Never mind the fact that it's 6.2 miles long, its pitch is that of a difficult blue at many Colorado resorts. If you make the mistake of taking the Stairway to Heaven quad chair up there, good luck! The (singular) blue run from the top of that chair is Colorado-black-diamond steep! And the visibility is often really bad. Not a good combination. Also, I'm not really sure how they differentiated between a single and a double black. If you're used to single black diamond runs other places, you might really want to consider which lines you're going to take at Kicking Horse. Cliffs and rocks abound in the upper area. Personally, I would label the entire north face of CPR Ridge as double black, with maybe one or two exceptions. They are all labeled single black. If you're going to have double black diamond runs, and many resorts opt not to and just have black diamond be the hardest, then you should probably label a chute named "Tunnel Vision" (which bottlenecks to less than 6 feet wide, requires a mandatory drop of various heights depending on the snowpack, and is over 45 degrees in pitch) as a double black. If you want to ski the really hard stuff, then you'll be skiing every other run from the top of White Wall all the way back to the gondola. That's 4100 feet of uninterrupted vertical in one run, and once the steeps are done, you've got two to three thousand feet of bumps to punish your quads further. If, that is, the gondola is open. If not, there are options to pursue on the lower mountain from the Pioneer lift, but the line gets long and the trees get skied out.

The base area at Kicking Horse, while beautiful, is subpar at best in function. It seems that the resort doesn't want to develop the area to the extent that it can be. There are a few cool bars, including the "Local Hero" where the atmosphere is really chill and laid back. Neaby Golden is apparently pretty fun, but I didn't spend any time there other than sleeping. I was way too tired. For truly unsurpassed views and excellent food, I definitely recommend the Eagle's Eye restaurant at the top of the gondola. They do dinner on Fridays and Saturdays, and lunch every day.

So, long story short. If you want to really challenge yourself, go to Kicking Horse. You will not be disappointed. Its steeps and technical terrain will keep you happy, and exhausted, for weeks. But if you want the whole family vacation experience, Banff is probably more suitable, but certainly more expensive. They do offer daily shuttles to the Horse, though. I didn't look into that too much, but it seems like a viable alternative to staying in Golden.

Great mountain, superb terrain, good snow (mind you 2007 has been a good year) BUT THAT GONDOLA hasn't got the capacity and the whole place hangs on this one lift.
So don't pick a busy weekend, or a windy one (cause that closes the gondola)

THE BEST - Kicking Hore surpasses ALL others, even Sunshine and Louise. The most reliable snow conditions I have yet seen, a combination of groomed, light powder, and deep stuff too. AMAZING VARIETY from extreme to a few easy ones - even the blue runs are interesting and the views are absolutely outstanding!!! One setback - 45 to an hour at the gondola can at times truly make this place SUCK. Poor visablity has occasionaly been an issue for me.

This is a fantastic place for intermediate or advanced skiers.
If you are working on your form, the blue runs below Staraway Heaven chair and the gandola will help you. To challenge yourself more, try the bumps on Think Twice from the inside of the bowl. Numerous short blues and single diamond runs below Big Ten too.
Want some "nucking futs" stuff? Go to the CPR ridge, Fuze Bowl, and the unmarked trail below Brig's Brag on a powder day. Remember to kick and turn, watch the trees and rocks. You won't believe how much are there to explore under only 5 lifts. Beautiful trees, georgeous views, nice people. Only a little far from downtown Golden so you have to rely on limited bus service if not renting a car. However, if you are here to ski, then ski, you don't pay the inflated price just for show.

Kicking Horse is a unique experience. Sure Jackson Hole and Whistler have great terrain, but KH has a whole different feel to it. There are very few posers- the people who come here, come to ski and ride. The resort doesn't have a J Crew store or movie theaters like Whistler- but who cares. They have that stuff in Seattle! Go to KH for the incredible skiing- chutes, glades, steeps, its all there. Of all the resorts I have been to, KH ranks in the top 3 (Alta and Taos being the other 2). Go there now and see a great ski area in its infancy!

Dec. 26-Dec. 29th 2006 was when i was there. This was the Best Canadian Experience thus far in my life. You MUST be Inter. - to Expert to enjoy this hill to it's fullest. Very little to offer for beginners but the Catamount Quad will look after you for a couple days. 15min ride to the top of the mountain on the Gondola and you can ride powder for 30-40 mins. The cat tracks to get to the blue/green runs are challenging off the Gondola and throughout, so be prepared.

It would take a good 5 days to really scope out this mountain to it's fullest. And for all you Sunshine/Louise lovers i'm sorry but move over and hop in the back seat because Kicking Horse will soon be the #1 resort off the #1 highway from Calgary into the Rockies.

If the Gondola was down or the snow conditions weren't there i could see some neg. reviews happening. Lots of snow slows things down a bit as the vert. drop is the biggest challenge in places, and limits the ice in the steeps that could happen if snow conditions were poor.

#1 Experience was Big Mountain in Whitefish Montana. When this place gets a dump go check it out well worth it.

January 6: 16 cm of new snow seemed like enough of a reason to make the drive to Golden. We arrived at 8:30 to a busy base area, everyone chomping at the bit to get up high and into the bowls, as there only seemed to be about 6-8 cm on the lower mountain. I'd heard they have had a great snow year so was pretty disappointed to hear that the gondola (the only lift to the top) was down due to high wind.

There was a pretty big line for the gondola, folks waiting (praying?) for the winds to die, so we headed up the Catamount quad and then hit a fast groomer over to the Pioneer double, the original old chair frm when Kicking Horse was the small, local Whitetooth ski area.

The runs off the Pioneer are decent enough, good rolling fall-line burners and some nice trees, and we enjoyed 2 good runs through the 6-8 cm of fresh. After that, I think people got tired of waiting for the gondola to open and there were suddenly 20 minute line-ups at both the chairs for most of the rest of the day. Things got skiied out pretty quickly after that. The gondola never opened. Unfortunate but what can you do about weather? I'll try again later, as KH is having a very good snow year.

Post - script: 43 cm Monday January 8 morning. The gondola was running. Must have been epic...

I just got back from Kicking Horse over New Years and the conditions were amazing. We were riding in waist deep pow on 2nd and 3rd. Good, challenging terrain that is easily accessible! Much better than all the mountains in Alberta. Only downside is the gondola as it stopped frequently when we were there. They need to make that thing more reliable as it is the primary vessel to get people up the hill.....
