Sunrise is what it is. It's a fair mountain. I went in February and the snow was outstanding. That being said, it needs a MAJOR overhaul. Please pave the parking lot! Update the base area so it's not stuck in the 80s. Ditto the lifts. If they added just two more high speed lifts in strategic locations, it would greatly improve the skiing experience. The triple on Cyclone is a joke. It's one of the slowest lifts I've been on and I've skied for 32 years. It's tough to sit on a lift for 12 minutes for a 5 minute run. There has to be some money made at the HonDah Casino to splurge a little bit on your other moneymaker.

The resort is AWFUL. The floors in and out of the rooms are filthy brown. Our shower had mold in in, the floor was lifting in the bathroom, the rooms were very dirty, there was an unidentified substance all over the headboard of the bed, the paint was bubling and peeling, and the entire place smelled of mold. The staff was indiferent, but did let us out of our reservation the next day.
The park was fun, but the facilities need remodeling and the food was not good. Not a good value, as they are open from 9am to 4pm and everything is very pricey.

I read a couple of negative comments here - I think the people posting just don't get it - This is not a Colorado (Vail?) or Utah (Park City?) or even a New Mexico (Taos?) thing - This is a laid back comfortable friendly Arizona thing - I found the staff very friendly -
Here is my slice of life - One of my most memorable ski days - The drive from Phoenix to Pinetop in Northern Arizona is breathtaking - There is nothing that compares with driving long winding roads while watching the sun come up through the mountains. I woke up and started driving to the Sunrise ski area before the sun came up. I had just gotten over the flu and I was thinking that I would just kind of hang out on Saturday, get a good night's rest and do my skiing on Sunday. Before 10am, I arrived at the condos where I would be staying. Check-in time was 4pm. I had planned to either hang out by the condos in the Jacuzzi, or drive another 20 miles to the slopes and check out the lodge. The Jacuzzi was looking like the better choice - I was feeling a little better than the night before, but, I was still making good use of my tissues and 'Ricola' on the ride through the mountains.
When I stopped at the desk to pre-check in and let them know that I was going to hang out for a while, they let me know that my condo was ready for me. This was what I needed to hear. I brought my things into the condo, gulped down the rest of the spiced V8 I'd been drinking in the car and dosed myself with Airborne while boiling huge pot of water with a few drops of oil to fill the air with the smell of eucalyptus and lavender. I then made myself my favorite hot chocolate concoction - organic chocolate and honey in hot oat milk. By 11am I was feeling 'cured' - :) Relaxing with my hot cocoa, I called my friend, Morgan who was skiing with his daughter Megan. I left a message thinking that we might arrange a lunch meeting at the lodge. When he called me back, he had no difficulty at all talking me into taking advantage of the 12:30 - 4pm half-day lift ticket rate. I suited up, ate an energy bar for lunch, filled my pockets with Ricola, and headed for the slopes.
Driving into the parking lot, I was thankful that I had been able to upgrade my usual economy car rental to a hybrid SUV. The paving in the parking lot consisted mostly of hard dirt that looked like it could possibly melt into mud before the end of the day. It was a busy day and I wasn't able to park close to lodge, so I was also happy that I had my skis and boots in ski and boot bags. Still, the walk through parking lot reminded me that I was just barely post-flu.
It was almost noon. Happy to see that I had another 30 minutes to recuperate from my parking lot trek before I could buy my half-day lift ticket, I put on my boots, checked my skis and street boots with the ski valet for 75 cents, and went into the lodge for cup of instant 'latte'. While sipping my latte, and studying the trail map, I called Morgan who answered his phone from the 'Geronimo' lift. 'Could I meet them at the top of the lift?', he asks. Sure - Why not? There are three mountains at Sunrise. The parking lot and main lodge where I was sipping my latte, are at the base of the mountain furthest to the right on the trail map. The Geronimo lift was the highest lift on the middle mountain. To get there, I would have to take the high-speed lift from the main lodge, to the top of the first mountain then ski down and around taking first a green then a blue run to the second mountain.
I collected my skis from the ski valet and thinking of my parking lot trek, gave him $4.00 to cover the over-night rate - This was a bargain that would save me the trouble of carrying the skis back and forth across the parking lot after skiing Saturday and before the skiing that I was still planning to do on Sunday. It was almost 12:30 when I purchased my lift ticket and stepped into my skis.
The skiing was PERFECT - A beautiful sunny day - I met my friends at the Geronimo lift and skied gloveless with my jacket open for close to 3 hours. It was all so beautiful that, except for the moment when I was popping in a Ricola telling my friends to please ski on ahead - I would have completely forgotten about the fact that I was getting over the flu. It did hit me after I took my skis off and climbed the stairs in the lodge. I sat motionless for about 30 minutes well aware that I was pretty much SPENT. Finally, at around 4pm I drove back to the condo, nuked myself some lasagna, dosed myself with more Airborne, and boiled more aroma therapy water and just enjoyed the endorphin high that one gets from fighting off the flu with a ski day.

I will never again stay at Sunrise Lodge. It is poorly maintained and desperately needs a complete renovation. Snow came into our room through the cracks around the door and window. Linens were questionably changed. Walks were not shovelled after a snow storm. It may be cheap, but you definitely get what you pay for. I agree, the only plus is its proximity to the ski area.

The Sunrise Ski Resort Hotel has the advantage of being the closet lodging to the Ski area. However it leaves much to be desired, service is not something to expect at this place. Bad attitude and unhelpful staff do abound however. Do not expect cleanliness nor well maintained rooms. Lodging here is pricey during peak times but neither the service or the hotel merit the price. The only thing at a premium is location, location, location.

When the snow is good, it's good for the first couple of run before it quickly gets tracked up. Mountain staff is slow, some of the ski instructors are rude. This mountain used to be just ok, however it looks like they are trying to turn it into a money pit and it is making it worse. The food is overpriced and terrible and they will yell at you if they catch you bringing your own food into the lodge. Sometimes lift line management is pretty bad. They are only concerned with scanning your ticket, then its a cattle call to get on the lift on Sunrise mountain. It's not uncommon to see someone get plowed over because another person loaded too far back and no one is there to tell them to step up to the line to load.
With that being said... The terrain on Sunrise is great for beginners. The bunny hill is very very very short and is usually crowded. My suggestion is to go up to midway and use the bunny hill for practice getting off the lift. The park is okay with a couple good hits. They actually improved in this area but don't expect the park to change much through the season. While Apache and Cyclone offers better terrain than Sunrise (Sunrise is composed of three peeks.. Sunrise, Apache and Cyclone for the visitors)... the lifts are ultra slow. Getting up Cyclone take a forever and a day but once up there, there is some pretty good steeps to take, short steeps but steeps. Getting back to Sunrise Mountain from the backside (Apache and Cyclone) is a complete pain. There is a trail called sidewinder which actually goes uphill a little before there is a gradual decline. Snowboarders be prepared to take off your board and hike it for a little ways (It is possible to get through it with enough speed) and Skier be prepared to push a little with your poles. Since this is the only way back, it usually gets pretty iced over and the trail is not that wide, so if someone falls, they block about 30-45% of the run. (for skiers wearing boats this percentage increases)
Overall, if they have good snow, it's not bad. Customer Service is pretty much NON EXISTENT, so don't expect anything. If you are in the area for something else, then it may be worth a visit if they have good snow.
Overall - 2. I realize this is a local mountain and it's bigger than the other Ski areas in AZ, but having been to a real resorts, I'm a little spoiled now. If you are someone who is learning, then you are just their to learn and the other stuff won't matter too much to you.
Family Friendly - 2. There's nothing special for families or anything that makes it easier for a family, ie special meeting places, message board, discounts etc. The easy terrain makes it beginner friendly though.
Downhill Terrain - 2-3 Cyclone and Apache has the more challenging terrain but lifts are slow and the terrain is short.
Terrain Park - 3. Nothing special, nothing spectacular but they do try to make it fun to play around in.
Apres Ski - HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!... not much if any. Oh wait! There is the Hon-Dah Casino if you are into gambling or stuffing your face at the buffet.... I'll give them a 1..... now where is that buffet....
My family and I skied at Sunrise Park for two days in Feb right after a great snow storm. We had the best time. We skied on Sun/Mon and there were no lines and the ski runs were empty. The lift rides were slow but I sat back and enjoyed the view and the slow pace. We bought a small house in Lakeside and I look forward to many years of skiing at Sunrise. I hope the snow keeps coming!
sunrise is a great place for all the locals of arizona, except for all the high maintence ppl who are expecting something else... 2 things, either lower your standards and go for the love of skiing only of go somewhere else. The staff is great, especially for ppl who wake up earlier than u all to drive an hour to try and please your snobby noses everyday. I've watched so many great native ppl get their heads chewed off for the stupidest reasons, just so these so called rich ppl can get a discount. High maintence? i dont think so. just cheapskates trying to rip off hard working ppl who have a budget to think about with the tribe in da hole. So to all the locals of arizona, keep supporting sunrise, and with a miracle like the great snow from this year, sunrise can improve instead of close down... love for the apache ppl. sunrise is the best resort of all of arizona, great service, great ppl, great snow, great hills!!! kewl!!!

I've been boarding up at sunrise for 5 years. This has been the best season for snow since I've been up there. Sure it's a small mountain compared with telluride or durango, which are also relatively close but for a 3+ hour ride from the valley and 60-70 degree temps what do you want? There are some flat areas between the apache peak and the main mountain which you have to get a lot of speed coming down to keep moving. Overall if you're looking for a quiet weekday afternoon getaway when the lines are non-existent, it's a good place to go, make sure you explore that way you'll have a better experience.

This is the mountain for beginners. The amount of expert terrain is very small and the fools who set up the lift placement have no clue. When I skied there many times all I could ski was the top to midway. The rest is so flat, bring a book to read.
