White Pass Still Waiting

By Miguel Strother on March 13, 2007

More than 20 years after the Washington Wilderness Act removed 800 acres for ski development in exchange for 23,000 acres of wilderness and there has yet to be any real movement in the attempt to expand the skiable terrain at Washington’s White Pass.

The ski area has experienced an increase of 36 percent in visits over the past four years and the so-called Hogback Basin proposal calls for the addition of several chairlifts and a mid-mountain lodge. Operators are asking for the public’s support of the proposal through a letter and email campaign.

“White Pass believes (the public) will agree there is a need for more diverse skiing and snowboarding opportunities, and a need to provide additional terrain to reduce skier and snowboarder density within the existing ski area,” says a company spokesperson.

Expansion

I agree that there is a need to expand the ski area but would like to address a couple of the comments above.

1st- The terrain that would be added is not difficult terrain. It is all beginner and intermediate terrain which is what White Pass needs. Adding easier terrain will help spread people out and reduce congestion in the existing area...primarily the Cascade Cattrack. Beginner and intermediate riders are the staple at any mountain.

2nd- Replacing Chair 2 with a high speed lift would not be of any help. All that would do is put more people onto an already crowded hill. That is why the ski area wants to expand outside of the existing area.

I would really like to see White Pass expand. First, it seems unfair to land swap and then have their efforts thwarted at every turn. Secondly, the construction would occur with little impact to the existing terrain as it would happen in the winter using snow cats etc. To look at the proposed area you can see there are natural glades that would make beautiful runs without the need to clearcut. Noting the increased use of the area it would help with congestion in the merging areas by spreading people out around the mountain and a mid-mountain lodge would make lunchtime more bearable. Please, let us enjoy the beauty of the winter landscape by responsibly expanding the White Pass Ski Area!

I believe that it is very important for the additon of Hogback Mountain. White Pass is in need of more acerage so that the number of people on the mountain will be more spread out. It will be difficult terrain and fun terrain that will improve the quality of the mountain and give it the oportunity to turn itself into a true resort. The mountain also needs to look at investing in new high speed quads to replace the backside lift and the old 2 - chair that sits dormant on the front side, it is never a bad thing to move people up the mountain fast and give them options on how they want to get up. They also need to keep looking to the future and more acreage that they can attain.
