Apex Pulls Off Super G at Dusk

By Miguel Strother on February 6, 2007

Despite the radiant sun and seemingly perfect race conditions, Apex
Mountain race organizers had to hold their breath as the wind almost
blew their chances of getting the final phase of the Mars Super G race
off on the weekend. In the end, however, Mother Nature decided to
cooperate.

Larisa Yurkiw Ontario's Georgian Peaks Ski Club in Ontario finished in
one minute, 18.36 seconds to take gold for the women.

"Its been a while since I put a super G run together like that - it was
wild, but lots of fun," says Yurkiw. "The wind was strong in the start,
but calmed right down after the second gate and really wasn't a problem
all the way down."

Because the race didn't start until 11:30am, the men's race was late,
the sun dipping behind the hills and visibility marred by near darkness.
In the end though, Jeffrey Frisch of Mt. Tremblant, Quebec blew the rest
of the field away.

"That was gnarly!" says Frisch. "You really have to be on your skis the
whole time to ride the bumps because it's kind of hard to see them."
