Mt. Ripley Hosts Winter Carnival Events

By Mike Terrell on January 30, 2007

The Michigan Tech Winter Carnival, which takes place February 7-11 in Houghton, draws thousands into town from surrounding communities and Upper Peninsula ski areas to see the larger-than-life ice sculptures created by the college students.

This is an engineering school and many of the elaborate sculptures are the size of small buildings. Nearby Mt. Ripley, a ski area owned by the college, hosts numerous skiing and boarding events during the carnival. The Heartland’s only true backcountry ski area, Mt. Bohemia with its huge 900-foot vertical drop, is less than an hour away.
