All Aboard for the Ski Train to Winter Park 1-26-08

Beat the weekend ski traffic. Relax, party, don't worry about driving, go for a train ride.
If you want to really get in a lot of skiing, don't ride the Ski Train. If you want a liesurely pace, a breakfast buffet on the way up and a dinner buffet with an open bar on the way back, think Ski Train; especially the luxury cars. A local environmental consultant hired the three luxury cars and invited about 70 of their clients, including a couple lawyers at my firm last Saturday for a trian ride and some skiing at Winter Park. The train left Denver at 7:15 (we got to the depot by 6:30) and didn't arrive at Winter Park until 9:40. The ride back (even though downhill) was about the same. No matter; the food and drink were great and hanging out in the dinning car sipping beer was so much better than sitting in I-70 traffic, it was like a real apres ski experience instead being like another teeth grinding commute to work. Hmm, what a concept.
It was a typical crowded Saturday at Winter Park, but the sun was out, the snow was fresh and we went after it. In a miracle approaching titanic proportions, we found uncut powder in the trees around noon. Sorry, can't tell you where or it won't be there next time I look for it. We took a hike across the tundra from the top of the new Panorama lift and dropped into the Cirque for some more fresh tracks (on a Saturday?). Later in the day, bumps were mandatory and the non-stop Outhouse run was obligatory.
The train whisle blew starting about 3:30 and we had to head back. The train leaves at 4:15 whether you're on it or not.
