Magic Lift Grip Slips

By Roger Leo on January 8, 2008

Nobody was hurt, but lift operation was halted.

A chair’s cable grip failed on Magic Mountain’s Black Lift Saturday, Jan. 5, allowing one loaded chair to slide backward into another. Nobody was injured, but loading was stopped and the lift was run slowly to unload passengers already aboard.
Operators took immediate steps to repair the grip, inspect the lift, and get it ready for operation.
This illustrates several things. First, risk in skiing takes many forms, and despite the best efforts and intentions of all involved, mishaps happen. Second, always, always dress as if the lift you are riding on will break down for an extended period just when you are at the high point, dangling far above the ground, in the teeth of a bitter north wind. It probably won’t happen often, but when it does, it’s better to be dressed appropriately.

several people were hurt with this incident my son being one. the chair in question drop 2 boys 25feet or more to ground, the people in the chair lift behind were hurt when the chair the boys were in slipped back and hit them. Please refer if you are safety concious to an article in Time Argus dated January 11th 2008 where one of the owners clearly states that someone was hurt!!!!!! it also states three other chairs were found to have the same pin missing!!!!! also everyone involved in this accident is experiencing difficulty getting call backs from anyone at the mountain with insurance information.........
