The weather, unfortunately the lack of winter-like weather, is the big news in the Heartland for snowsports enthusiasts. Mild weather is taking its toll on Midwest ski areas, and the 10-day long-range, weather forecast shows no relief from the much above normal temperatures that have been so persistent.

Colorado resorts are delighting over recent snowfalls, which are pushing year-to-date totals up over the 100-inch mark. Wolf Creek leads the way after the most recent storm dumped three feet, letting them open the entire mountain. Aspen had two feet, and two snow days for the local kids.

An Ohio area fired up its guns overnight and plans to open Thursday while another Heartland ski area has decided to hang it up this season. Jerry Balmes, owner of Skyline, a small ski area located near Grayling, Michigan, gave up on this winter tourism season weeks ago.
