The three open North Carolina areas are in snow conservation mode at present, hanging on to what they've got. Cataloochee, which is proud of its "first to open, last to close" boast, is ceasing operations on Mondays for the rest of the season.

The North Carolina areas got their fair share of snow from the so-called "Valentines Day Bouquet" which brought snow to the Northeast, New England, and down into North Carolina over the Holiday.

Cataloochee Ski Area is looking forward to a busy President’s Day Weekend thanks to heaps of man-made snow. According to mountain rep Tammy Brown, “We’ve got more snow on the mountain than we’ve ever had. Ever.”

A hazardous weather outlook has road crews bracing for the worst in North Carolina and Cataloochee Ski Area looking for a reprieve from unseasonably warm temperatures. The thermometer at the Maggie Valley mountain already shows a drop of almost 25 degrees from 53 to 29 over the past 24 hours.

After an auspicious opening that rivaled many of the bigger areas out West and stole more than a little of their thunder at the same time, Cataloochee Ski Area, N.C., has closed again.
