The Lower Midwest is closed for the 2006/07 season. All across Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa and Missouri this past weekend was the last hurrah for ski areas scattered across the lower portion of the Heartland, and it was about right on schedule; unlike the beginning of the winter season, which was very late in starting.
Many ski areas across this same region weren’t able to open for the season until late January because of warmer than normal temperatures preventing snowmaking and a lack of natural snow. Even ski resorts in northwest Michigan – known for its heavy lake effect snow – were barely 50 percent open until late January. Most of the lower Heartland ski areas normally close about this time so the season is ending on schedule, but overall the late start and lack of snow during the Holiday Season has left it a less than desirable snowsports season. Skiing continues across the upper Midwest and around the Great Lakes; probably through the rest of this month and into April for some.
