Heavy Snow in Baqueira Beret

By Patrick Thorne on March 8, 2007

Heavy snow is finally falling in Spain, the ski nation which has probably suffered the most from Europe’s warm 06/07 winter. Whilst the Alps started to receive increasingly heavy snowfalls soon after Christmas and even peripheral ski areas, such as the island of Cyprus in the southern Mediterranean close to Israel and Lebanon reported 20 inch snow depths by the end of February, most ski areas in Spain had had little or no natural snowfall until now. As of last week some ski areas had still not opened for the season.

That situation is changing dramatically now with Baqueira Beret, the largest of Spain's ski resorts which lies at the head of the beautiful Val d'Aran, on the northern side of the Pyrenees reporting 20 inches of snowfall in the past few days with forecasters predicting a further two to three feet is likely to follow.

Developed by Luis Arias, a Spanish National Ski Champion, Baqueira first opened in 1964 and is a favourite with the Spanish Royal family who
regularly holiday there. Its location provides a unique Atlantic climate
guaranteeing high quality snow, just the right amount of sunshine and, due to its southerly latitude, an hour's more daylight than the Alps. The resort is well laid out, has a modern lift infrastructure and a lively and varied après ski scene with international visitors especially appreciating the relatively reasonable Spanish prices.
