Sierra Nevada (we’re talking the Spanish original here, not the Californian copy!) comes in to its own for full-on vacations in Spring, as its proximity to the Costa Del Sol on Spain’s Mediterranean Coast makes it easy to ski here in the morning and hit the beach in the afternoon.

After a dry early season, most of Spain’s resorts have seen increasingly heavy snow through March, three months later than hoped! Temperatures are currently low - typically -10C at the tops of the ski areas and the latest falls have taken upper slope snow depths at some Spanish Pyrenean resorts past a metre (40 inches).

Heavy snow is finally falling in Spain, the ski nation which has probably suffered the most from Europe’s warm 06/07 winter. Whilst the Alps started to receive increasingly heavy snowfalls soon after Christmas and even peripheral ski areas, such as the island of Cyprus in the southern Mediterranean close to Israel and Lebanon reported 20 inch snow depths by the end of February, most ski areas in Spain had had little or no natural snowfall until now. As of last week some ski areas had still not opened for the season.

The Spanish ski resorts are - like many of their North American colleagues - in snow conservation mode as lack of new snow and rainy conditions has abraded their base levels.

Winds, Rain Close In On Spain A few Spanish ski areas suspended operations Wednesday in the face of high winds and snow-eroding rainfall. Valesqui and La Pinilla both closed due to inclement weather. There was no immediate word as to when the areas would resume operations.

High winds and stormy weather forced the closure of at least one Spanish ski area Friday as the promise of additional snowfall buoyed hopes for a successful ski weekend.

After a slow start to the winter ski season, Spanish resorts are rebounding. Recent snowfall and creative piste maintenance have kept Spanish areas in the game, and additional storms are forecast.
