Chile Resorts Blanketed Anew

By southamerica@mo... on July 16, 2007

Chile resorts received intermittent storms throughout the week, leaving between 30cm and 65cm of snow.

Snowfall swept through the Andes this weekend, favoring the Chilean side with more bountiful snow than its neighbor Argentina. This recent snow has maintained a solid base at resorts with an average 1 to 2 meters of snow at the upper peaks. Any worries about a bad snow season have been put to rest.

Everyone’s set to ski powder at Portillo, which reported 65cm of new snow this week. The three valleys are also hitting bed early to be up early for more powder skiing and snowboarding, with a reported average of 50 to 60cm of new snow this past week, finishing off on Monday afternoon. Termas de Chillan had cold temperatures and some ice, but it is currently snowing in the south today, with wet snow predicted for Wednesday. Pucon will receive snow throughout the week. The temperature at ski resorts is fluctuating between 2 and 13 degrees Celsius.

This weekend Valle Nevado opened a new lift to facilitate access to their popular Bajo Zero mountainside restaurant, and to provide a convenient connection with their snowpark and the Andes Express quad; the new lift has also created a new run El Tap. Valle Nevado is opening its chairs at 8:30am. Like Portillo, Valle is celebrating Wine Week this week with winemaker’s dinners, wine tastings and wine knowledge classes.
