By Miguel Strother on March 25, 2008

Police continue to search for a lost Japanese snowboarder on Blackcomb Mountain.

Ai Ito, 25, was last seen riding the Seventh Heaven Chairlift early Thursday, March 20.

All of the fresh snow in Whistler presents difficulties, according to search and rescue workers.

The Whistler RCMP is asking anybody with information on the woman’s disappearance to call (604) 932-3044.

...according to The Question:

Ito search ongoing
Authorities have yet to locate Ai Ito, the 25-year-old Japanese snowboarder who was last seen on Thursday, March 20. An intensive search of Blackcomb Mountain had failed to locate her as of Sunday (March 30) morning. Early last week, the intensive search involved as many as 40 members of the RCMP, Whistler Search and Rescue, Blackcomb Ski Patrol and Blackcomb Helicopters, along with search dog teams from the RCMP and the Canadian Avalanche Rescue Dog Association. But that search was scaled back last Wednesday (March 26) to include only two search dog teams, at least partly because of the slim chances of finding Ito alive, police said.

On Monday (March 31), RCMP Staff Sgt. Steve Leclair said officials’ efforts are now classified as a recovery effort. He said dog teams are searching “when they’re available.”

Staff Sgt. Leclair said authorities believe Ito’s body is buried under the some 50 centimetres of snow that has fallen since she went missing.

“It was 249 cm before that time,” he said. “Once it comes back down to 249 cm, then we’ll be able to do some more effective searching.”

How sad! We were at seventh heaven that day and visibility was close to zero. Even so it was one of our favorite areas. Has she been located yet?
