Whistler-Blackcomb, BC: Voted Favorite Resort

By OnTheSnow on April 22, 2008

Orinda, California: What's the favorite overall North American ski resort of visitors to OnTheSnow.com, the oldest and most-visited snow sports portal on the Internet? It's Whistler Blackcomb, B.C. The Web site, which attracts an audited 1.2 million individuals monthly during the winter, gave its visitors the opportunity to write reviews of all North American resorts and rank them in five categories.

Whistler Blackcomb received perfect scores in the overall favorite and downhill terrain categories and was near perfect for its nightlife. The ratings were based primarily on readers' average ranking, number of reviews, and specific comments made in OnTheSnow.com over the winter season.

"More and more skiers and snowboarders are relying on the word of their peers when they make resort choices," said Mountain News President and Publisher Rob Brown, whose company publishes OnTheSnow.com. "We believe the importance of reader advisories will continue to grow each year and these annual awards provide a peek into their thinking."

Reviewers were clear in their comments: "The most remarkable impression I have of the whole 10 days was the ability for skiers and snowboarders to share a mountain in complete harmony," wrote one reviewer. "It also has the largest amount and widest variety of terrain of any resort: couloirs, cliffs, cornices, groomers, glades, wide open bowls, terrain parks, moguls, pillow lines, backcountry, everything," wrote another.

"It has a good pitch with a ton of great runs. A lot of great steeps. A lot of great tree runs. A lot of great groomers. And it has an abundance of splendid alpine scenery," said another reviewer.

Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains rise up a mile out of the valley with 5,280 vertical feet and more than 8,100 acres of prime terrain. There are 12 alpine bowls, three glaciers, and more than 200 marked trails. Average annual snowfall is 360 inches. The resort will be host to skiing events at the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.
