Australia’s major commercial resorts cranked up their t-bars and chairlifts for the opening weekend of the ski season on June 7. A number of early season snowfalls in May pointed to a record opening weekend with many predicting a bumper season similar to North America’s just gone.

Sydney, Australia. – Chile and Argentina will be the first of the Southern Hemisphere ski-resort regions to be hit with a cold front, although Australia or New Zealand won't be far behind as the new upside-down ski season goes into full swing this week. That's the 2008 snowfall prediction from Dr. Jeff Masters, Director of Meteorology at The Weather Underground.

Early season snowfalls continue in the Australian resorts with Thredbo experiencing thirty centimetres overnight with more on the way. Lifts are opening across the resorts.

AUSTRALIA -- Ski fields in New South Wales and Victoria experienced an overdue cold front on the weekend (6/14-15)with most reporting 15 centimetres of snow. Temperatures remained low enough for snow making with more snow forecast.
