Author Thomas Mann immortalized Davos in his famous book, The Magic Mountain. You might even stay in a hotel that was once a sanitorium in the days before tuberculosis was eradicated. Or, on the brighter side, perhaps the room you are in was occupied by a world leader during the annual World Economic Forum.

But, skiing and riding is why you're here, not for literature or discussions. This modern day magic mountain offers 307 km of prepared slopes and limitless off-piste terrain. It has nearly 75 km of cross country loops and endless winter walking trails.

There are six superb skiing and riding mountains, three on each side of a long valley. Most popular of all is the Parsenn, initially accessed by a cogwheel train. There are a variety of slopes of different gradients and efficient lifts on top, some connecting to the nearby village of Klosters.

Try the roundabout cruise home after skiing the terrain underneath the Weissfluhgipfel peak. It’s a relatively easy run that drops into the trees, then into farm pastures, and eventually down into the village of Kueblis. It's then a 30-minute train ride back to Davos.

Davos actually has two parts to it, Dorf and Platz, on each side of the congress hall, the Kirchner art museum, and the community swimming pool.

Davos is one of 12 classic mountain resorts in five alpine countries that promote jointly as "The Best of the Alps." Gateway for this resort in the Graubünden canton of eastern Switzerland is Zurich, two and a half hours away.
