I have a 2006 Subaru Impreza wagon and I love it. Drives well and handles nicely in the snow. I haven't taken on anything too snowy or unplowed, but the subaru AWD is one of the best. I also love my car because I get around 27-28 mpg! The trunk on the impreza is small, so I might suggest an Outback for more room and for higher ground clearance - I've heard the ground clearance on the Outback is the same as on a Ford Explorer!
