    I think you are so right.Often we let our guard down when in a foreign country, with the notion "it cannot happen to me". When we travel, I make sure that not only do we watch our possessions all the time, but try to put the baggage belt around our feet, or hold all the time. With me there is no such thing as not watching 100% of the time.
    Years ago I came up with the idea to lengthen my trouser pockets, easy for a tailor to do, so that pickpockets dont have it easy.
    I also carry the minimum amount of cash I need for the day, the rest in hotel safe.These days easier to pay for eveything with a credit card, so have little cash, and dont use ATMs since commissions too high.
    Also, carry money in an inside zipped pocket, as with passports etc.If traveling with a camera, I keep it in a pocket until needed, so as not to have any valuables outside my person.
    There are ways to foil the petty thieves that prey on tourists.
    Just be aware, and be constantly on the alert.
