Lutsen is the best lift-served skiing in the Midwest (except for Bohemia).
I always get a season pass to Spirit Mountain and Lutsen each year, and even though I can hit Spirit with a rock from where I live, I still go to Lutsen more. Yeah, it's only a 1.5 hour drive for me, but even if you have to go, say three hours for it, it's still well worth it. Especially if you can get your buddies together and make a weekend out of it.
If price is a factor, depending on where you live, you can get discounted tickets for "locals." Just go to http://www.lutsen.com/local . Otherwise, go up there for a weekend and buy two-day tickets, which save you about $10-$12. Lastly, if you can't afford to stay on the mountain, check out The Mountain Inn, which is literally a hundred feet from the cat tracks. It's a lot cheaper, and a decent place. There's also the Cliff View which is about a 5 minute drive to the chairs, but is even cheaper yet.
The short answer: Lutsen is better than every where else in Minnesota. They have better & bigger terrain, far better snow, and it's a great place to road-trip to. I would highly recommend Lutsen over anything else.
It's easier, in my opinion, to go from skiing to snowboarding. So I think you'd be in the best boat to convert. Going from snowboarding to skiing is a piece of cake, many snowboards have told me. Personally, I couldn't transfer my knowledge of skiing to snowboarding.
I'm an avid skier, and that's just because of the way I've been doing snow sports. I have nothing against (most) snowboards, and as a matter of fact, when I go on trips, I have snowboarders with. I think we can all just get along! :)
My big concern with snowboarding is that it's a little bit harder to access OB or backcountry stuff. I mean, it's possible, but right "out of the box" it's easier for skiers. If a snowboarder is geared up properly, however, it's not a big deal.
I say you can have your differences. Ski and boarders unite!
I've been hearing about you folk for years now, and the snow you get. I think it's my turn to partake. Here's hoping I can make it out thata way this year!
