It is busy and more expensive during Christmas. Most resorts bump up prices from Dec. 22 through MLK weekend January 20ish.
Plus, this past winter, the snow wasn't good at all during the holidays. The best snow was from February - April. So my word of advice is: Come in late February or early March and you'll be sure to find some powder!
Last time I was in Tahoe, my girlfriend and I noticed a lot of Subarus on the roads. Imprezas, Forresters, etc. etc. So we decided to play a game and count how many Subarus we saw on our drive to downtown Truckee and back to the cabin. We counted at least 60! And it's a short drive (5 miles each way)! No kidding. So Subarus are definitely the "snow car" of choice in the Tahoe area. I can't speak for other areas of the country though. Anyone on the East Coast got some insight? Rockies? How about in the Pacific Northwest?
Your stoy is inspiring. If you're looking to be a ski bum for the 2009-2010 winter, you want somewhere to set up shop, ride all day and party all night, then TAHOE is the place. Spending a whole winter in Tahoe would be a dream come true. Shoot, you could spend a whole YEAR in Tahoe and have a blast. There is a TON to do during the summer and fall too. 1) The Tahoe area is definitely not devoid of chicks. The Tahoe locals are the nicest people, there is abundant nightlife (casinos, bars, concert venues, clubs, and more), and there are more snow-bunnies, per-capita, than just about anywhere else. People (like me) frequently come from the Bay Area for day trips and vacations so there is always a mix of people. 2) There are 14 great ski areas to choose from. The North Shore and south shore both have casinos, spas, restaurants, clubs, great views, and sweet beaches. While Heavenly reigns supreme on the south side, Squaw Valley takes the top spot up north with a few others (Alpine Meadows, Northstar, and Sugar Bowl) offering paralelled experiences. 3) Depending on what you're trying to do for income, there are many job choices. As I said, Tahoe serves the muliti-millions of people that visit from the Bay Area (and elsewhere), and so the ammenities are great. I've noticed that a lot of the people who work at the resorts (especially the seasonal jobs) are young, and from South America, Australia, or New Zealand ... and they like to party! So there are always chances to meet new people. Come to Tahoe and you won't regret it.
Initial reports that I read said she fell face first. Would a helmet have protected her face? This was an unfortunate, freak accident. Reporters are saying that she developed a blood clot in between the brain and the skull, causing the brain to swell. Scary, yes, but it should not make people scared to go skiing or snowboarding.
The SIA show should move to South Lake Tahoe. Why Denver? Tahoe would be SO much better ... I mean where else could you get off a gondola to gambling, shows, bars, clubs and parties? No Where! Denver has WInter Park and A-Basin ... OK, but what else?
Soda Springs has an un-pretentious atmosphere. Might be a relatively small hill, but when I went last season they had two great table-top jumps that me and my buddies hit on every run. Rarely ever long lift-lines ... Soda Springs is perfect for those laid back days.
Props to Louie! A world class snowboarder giving back to the community in which he came up.
Snowboarders in the Midwest should take advantage of this event!
This is a real incentive for me because where I live (California) the snow just hasn't arrived yet ... Dec. 13,14,15 Tahoe is supposed to get hit though! Pray for snow!
This sounds like a thrill! I read that it hangs up to 1427 ft. in the air ~ (higher than four-and-a-half Statues of Liberty) ~ and never passes a single support tower. 2010 Winter Olympics here I come!
I hope this projected storm is something fierce b/c Boreal and the rest of the Lake Tahoe resorts need it ... badly! I want to come up, but my whole thing is powder/tree riding and the only place to do that right now is Michigan!
Sorry Butch, but according to snowbomb.com it looks like they only have buses to and from the Bay Area. https://www.recreation4fun.com/snowbomb/index.cfm?a=1225205786013

Robbo27: I have never been snowboarding in Europe, so I don't have a frame of reference to compare the apres of America and Europe ... but I can positively say that South Lake Tahoe and also the state-line area of the North Shore of Lake Tahoe have great nightlife and all the amenities you could ever ask for. Plus gambling! I would love to snowboard in Europe, but you should make it out to California and check out Lake Tahoe ...
